Hot cold, hot cold, faster slower, faster slower

the fan on top is for ambient sensor, i think. If that's faulty, there will be fault codes for the fan and if the sensor, the sensor. The fan is either on or dead. If dead, the ambient temp reading goes inconsistent with trapped air in the dash and will generally make temperature different to what's set, but won't radically change the blower speeds too much.

Dan,

You need a T-6 Torx, and yes it's small.

The fan does get dusty, but it's best not to blow into it with everything attached, however I would be surprised if this is causing the problem.
If you do blow it, any dust and dirt will end up on the electronics inside.
The best thing to do is to disassemble the whole unit, electronics and all. Then you can clean the fan without the rubbish contaminating anything.

If you have VCDS you can run the basic settings on the HVAC, and one of these tests runs the CC fan, so you'll hear if it's spinning or not.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Jeff

Well, I've swapped the Climate control unit for my old one which was sitting in the cellar and, so far, it seems to have cured the problem!
Hooley (Jason) provided the Torx screwdriver - all thanks to him! Those little Torx screws are hideous, and some of them were already stripped, which was a bit annoying, but all is well.

One thing I've noticed, my heated seat controls are not illuminated although the rest of the climate panel is. Something odd there too!
