How old is my battery?

Hi -

Having now got the heads-up on why my 2002 TDI is making the 4-beeps, I'd like to makes sure I don't just buy a replacement alarm unit before checking that it's not just the battery reaching the end of its life.

Problem is, the battery doesn't seem to have any indication on it about when it was installed or how long it should be good for. I've only owned my A2 for about 6-months (i.e. the nice warm months) and most journeys are good and long, used most days so it gets a good charge as well so starting has never been a problem.

The battery is a Varta unit but I'm really not sure how to check on whether it could do with changing, or not.

If anyone's got any suggestions on this I'd be really appreciative.

Thanks,

DT.

Take a photo, post it here and we'll tell you all about it. If you've got the spare wheel bracket in place, you'll need to remove it so we can see all the label on the battery.

Cheers,

Mike

Unless it has been changed by an Audi dealership, that's the original battery; it has an 8Z part number.

My bet is that the battery is the same age as the car, making it about 9 years old and therefore due for a change.

Cheers,

Tom

Cool - thanks Tom.

The more recent service history has been with independent garages (I believe) rather than Audi so I think you're right about it being the original unit.

Thanks for all the help,

DT.

Definitely the original battery - that part number was superceeded on 1/10/2001, with the 'AG' suffix. So, it's no newer than 10 years old - might well have sat on a shelf in the factory for a while too - you've had value for money out os it.

Cheers

Mike

On my battery the date of manufacture (month/year) was embossed on the negative terminal.

I can see something similar on yours but can't make out the numbers.

Had another look at the battery on the negative terminal it looks like it says 00/ZC
I guess that means YR 2000 ,would that be correct??

Adam

It's the same part number as the photo in an earlier post, so it could well be a yr 2000 battery.

So it's likely nearer the end of its life than beginning, so for £60-80 it's worth replacing in my opinion.

Hi I guess a new battery is in order .
So my question is are the batteries a specific type/make for an A2
Where is the best place to get one without being taken to the cleaners.

Adam

Have a quick browse through these websites; Halfords, ECP, GSF then call your local Audi dealer. You'll be amazed by the price difference.

You need a long reach torx driver for a couple of screws. Might be good to your radio security code handy, just in case (I didn't need it, the unit remembered).
