How to reinstall the ashtray

I've removed the ashtray when I installed a cable for my MP3 player.
I cannot seem to fit the tray again. I can't get the spring back in it's position. I did manage to get the spring in my finger though...

It seems that the end of the spring needs to click inside a thingy on top of the compartment. But I can't get it in.

Any tips ? (besides never removing the blasted thing again)
