Hi Guys,

Can anyone help me, or rather my father! He wants a sat nav system for his truck. Something where you can enter a postcode and it tells you where it is. Big screen, around the £4-500 mark, accurate and possibly a stand alone unit.

I have read all the other posts and I know what I would have, but this is a guy who still hasn't grasped the concept of email yet, well he is into steam trains, what do you expect? So something really, really user friendly.

Any advice gratefully received!

Sorry, I know this isn't really A2 related but you are all soooo helpful and wise in these matters......[23]

Plus, this takes my posts up to 100! Hurrah

I have a Navman icn 630, that fits the bill, easily movable between vehicles. Can be obtained for less than 400 quid (I paid 1000). They sell them in Costco for that price. Designed for use by idiots, and even bl***y idiots. I also found the firm most helpful, based in Crawley I think.

From what I hear, the tomTom Go is very easy to use and has a big screen... if he wants a bigger screen, a used Laptop with a GPS receiver might be a way to go.

bye, Frido.

Question about the the above 2 recommendations, do you enter a postcode or an address?

I was going to comment on that, but forgot.

AFAIK (based on experience with my PDA version of TomTom 3) TomTom Go allows you to enter an address (city/street/number) OR lattitude/longtitude (which is nice when trying to find camping sites from a guide that lists these coordinates) OR a postcode (instead of the name of a city).

Visit http://www.tomtom.com/support/right...new_search=&p_search_type=&p_search_text=code to see information from their support site. Or check out the site itself, www.tomtom.com.

TomTom Navigator and TomTom Go are undergoing all kinds of updates at the moment. More models, all with their own features.

Edo

Im really looking forward to the TomTom Go 500 which will be out in a month. It has a bluetooth handsfree setup in there so it can link to my phone and you can use it as an incar handsfree kit too, all through the same touch screen.

The new version of the TomTom software, TomTom 5 has got the postcode search in it, along with lots of excellent improvements. Really easy and foolproof to use.

The TomTom Go 300 is just over 350 quid and a bargain at that if you ask me!!! :)

The best unbaised place to go is the forums here:

I have both Co-pilot 4,0 live and Tom Tom. Tom Tom has ancient maps (so avoid on that level) but a great interface. Co-pilot has far newer maps and that is what you ultimately want. Tom Tom out of the box also has NO POSTCODE interface whereas Co-pilot has it out the box (unless you get TT5). Co-pilot reads out to you the actual instructions (ie road names and numbers) where Tom Tom can only say "left" or "right" and a few basic commands (though they are easy to follow)

But as I say go to the above website. They guys there know their stuff and there is a TON of useful information and reviews.

I am running tt3 and it definitely does have the postcode input (Have used both UK and France)

Maps are a little behind reality as it does not include M6 Toll and there is a section of the A417 which shows as a field.

I got mine only a few months ago and it does not have postcode finder... does not bother me much as I have Co-Pilot still as well. Both run happily together. Only got TT as I wanted a Bluetooth GPS and upgraded my PDA from 3750 to 4150...

Have you tried puting the postcode in when you get to the navigate to / address screen? - it is there but not listed as a separate option.
