Idling Issues

Hiya,

I have a A2 2002 1.4 SE with 115,000 on the clock. Recently went for a diagnostic scan and have currently changed the Manifold pressure sensor, coolant temperture sensor, and brake switch. Mechanic was sh*t sure that the manifold pressure sensor would fix the issue and it hasnt, he is now suggesting the timing is out which is a 3 hours labour job according to him. Now before I agree to this I wanted to ask you guys what you thought? As Im worried it isnt that and then it will be followed on by more diagnostics...

On tick over it has the *hunting* issue I have seen posted about on this forum already, we did the taping of the pipe etc prior to having the MPS changed. When I have the air con on the *hunting* settles and also upon start up from cold idles perfectly. Also I'd say the car is sluggish.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Where abouts are you as it maybe worth someone on here giving it a scan, and if the timing was out (3hr job) sounds like he would be changing the cambelt and why would he need to change that if its just out ?????????

does it sound like its hunting?

Yes (re the hunting), and today also failed to start turns over then dies 4th turn fired up.

Im in Essex.

everytime we rescan with the VAG it throws up diff codes...saying its too lean or something about the camshaft now, I dunno its a real pain atm.

Thanks for you replies

(btw timing checked, nothing wrong its spot on - He didnt charge me)

hi atwo Essex is a large area but i am in the chelmsford area and can recommend this company --- coggeshall auto repairs--- the guys name is Ian he is trained in vag group cars and is familiar with a2's. he has a guy that his sole job is auto electrical diagnosis.he solved my eml light problem and has just cured the problem of running lean on a2bluesports a2 also. his workshop is very clean and tidy.he has serviced my a2 now for almost 2 years also my wifes car and a2bluesports a2.he is a really nice chap-does good tea too.
hope this is of use to you mike , please mention me when you phone(mike big guy a2:D)

Just a quick catch up for anyone whom may experience similar problems.

After various sensors changed, it was decided that the throttle cable housing should be cleaned and that did the trick, it still hunts very slightly but nothing major and on the VAG scan no faults! Also is much much nippier.

*good times*

Now to put the baby up for sale....

Well that lasted all of 5 days, ENGINE MANAGEMENT LIGHT up again! Im so fed up with it,
Car is running perfect, yet this light is on. Took it for a VAG diagnostics and it has this "fuel additive too lean" again....

Any thoughts on what this could be.

Cheers

I had the 'too lean' fault code once and the car was perfect. It came on after I filled up 1/2 a tank of Tesco 99 (I normally run shell, think it was v-power before tesco). I've used tesco 99 before and it is not bad fuel and had no problem. I cleared the fault code when I got home. It hasn't come back on, then I filled up the usual v-power and it has been fine since. So clear it, give it some decent juice for a run and see if problem persist.

How would cleaning the throttle cable housing solve anything? The throttle is fly-by-wire, the throttle cable is an *electrical* cable! If it was shorting out, it'd have to be replaced!
