instrument panel creak

Thanks for your very quick and accurate help. I guess there is a reason for "Tech. Director", Skipton01! Even though I have removed all items including the ashtray the origin of the creaking sound is a mystery. It wasn't the indicator relay. I've been pushing and pulling around back in there, even sprayed the whole interior behind the radio and climate control unit with silicon spray. My wife has been lying with her head in front of the gearstick trying to locate the sound but no joy. Now, how do I remove the panel below the ashtray, the one in the middle that goes all the way to the gearstick?

Finger nails under the gearstick boot rim, pull it vertically upwards, then put both thumbs under the exposed edge of the said piece of trim, grasp and pull up and towards you.
Again, only clips hold it in place.

Cheers,

Mike

I did it and I still couldn't pinpoint the problem. Now I have to consider taking the car to Audi since it is still under warranty. But I hesitate to let their hands anywhere near my car.

These creaks are a b****r to track down - I've just got a new one above my head, somewhere behind the sun-visor, but damned if I know where.

The dealers probably won't want to know, or they'll just douse the area with silicone lubricant spray.

It might be the plastic frame that holds the radio and climate control unit that creaks. The problem is that I can't put my money on it since it's just a feeling. It could also be something closer to the engine, behind the panels. I´ve stopped investigating the problem.

I assume you have stopped investigating because the straight jacket doesnt allow you to have the freedom.

Creaky A2

Sounds like there's more creaks in an A2 than an old barn.....but I still like the A2.

Mine's developed a noticeable creak from somewhere between the centre console and the front nearside wheel in the last fortnight or so. It never happens on rutted or slightly potholed roads, or over sharp bumps, but usually on undulating or uneven roads when the car rebounds from the undulation. Strangely, after driving it the rain, it disappears, only to reappear when it's dry.

I wonder if it's suspension? My Dad used to have an old Fjord Fiesta and invariably in hot and dry weather it used to creak. With my A2 I'm not entirely convinced that the dealer will be too interested. The warranty runs out mid-September. Any ideas?

If you imagine the water as lubrication one might assume that it could be the suspension that creaks since it comes back when it dries up. Is it possible to make the sound come on by pushing down the front suspension repeatedly? While one person is doing that the other tries to locate the sound by ear and hand. Touching the part with your hand is a good way to find a fault since you might actually feel the vibration. Taking it to the dealer is always an option, but then you'll be without it for some time, and trust is another issue.

The creak is gone! It has healed itself it seems. Remember I've sprayed the whole area behind the radio and climate control unit with silicone spray, it might have found it's way to the right spot. I've not driven the car for several days. It has been parked outside (in a very hot space indeed). I took it for a ride today and the creak wasn't there for the 50 km I drove. Let's hope it stays that way.
