Insurance dilemma - Accident

@Mr Pip your insurer is right, your car is not worth £6k. It is probably worth less than £1K. This is the problem with putting lots of money int a car, it looks great, then using it as a daily (or insuring it as a daily). Your only option is an agreed value, garaged (with post code), low mileage policy.
But then you don't have a daily. You have a cherished classic, use it and insure it as such.

I don't wish to dampen you enthusiasm but agreed value is the value they agree to insure and not the value you think it's worth and they agree to.
Our agreed value policy guarantees that the payout you get will match how much your vehicle is worth, based on an evaluation by our dedicated team of specialists
For many years I was with Adrian Flux with agreed value. Each year I would get a renewal quote including the agreed value fee but without the actual agreed value I had to take a 7 specific photographs and send them in and then they would tell me their valuation, usually once the renewal date had passed.

Each year the agreed value went down. In 2021 it went down £500 to £3,000 (88K miles, 1 owner since the dealer, diesel, FSH, mapped, overdrive, etc) . I wrote a letter listing recent sales on the this forum with prices of £4,500 to £5,000 and highlighting how quick good examples sold, often within a day or so. They refused to budge so I left them and do not now have agreed value. If it gets written off I will compensate myself by treating myself to a newish EV.

An issue is that despite getting rarer each year there are still too many A2 being sold for £500 on ebay and this must depress the average value. Eventually there will be so few that they will become collectors items and will have a premium and be sold at classic auctions, but when that will be, who knows.

Update...

I got a phone call from engineer today and was offered a cash settlement based on current prices, labour cost plus vat for the sum of £700. I thought this was reasonable and I've accepted but the most important thing is my car not being categorised.

So when the better weather comes in I will be doing a bumper swap from the fsi to mine.

What are your thoughts on price? At least if anyone has a similar scenario at least they can have a base price :)

Thanks for all your help guys :)

Cammy

I think you could have got more. You can't get an MOT'd A2 without issues for under a grand now.

I didn't want to chance my arm regarding the awkwardness of how they were previously, I thought the offer was ok but I've not been in this position before so I will know next time :)

All I need to do is swap over and we should be good to go....now where are the tutorials for bumper swaps lol

This is a lesson well shared.

We really need to be able to get this car on classic car insurance or similar soon?

I think I’m going to have similar fun. I poor young chap rear ended me this morning on the A40 on the way into work whilst I was driving Tonka.

It was as a result of an absolute idiot performing a dangerous overtake that, had I not seen the danger a long way off and began slowing, then performed an emergency stop, would have been very serious.

I was stationary when the Peugeot 107 hit me from behind but I’ve no doubt they will want to classify Tonka 😡

Oh no ... and with a Votex kit on too  Here's hoping that rear crash beam has done its thing. At least no-one was injured and it's hopefully all bits that can be replaced or repaired, even if it might be a little more challenging than a straight bumper swap. How bad is the visible damage? (I'm not able to make much out from the photo).

Damn Erling, looks like its cracked the votex. Whatever you do, don't let them take it away. A day in the bodyshop will sort that and if you need parts give me a shout.

Oh Erling. bad luck. Looking at the photo from what I could see, it looks quite mendable. Being hit "up the back" does leave you in the drivers seat claims wise. Appearances indicate that the votex has seperated from the bumper, but the bumper does not appear to have shifted itself. Hopefully!

Best of luck.

Steve is absolutely right. ( I think he and I were writing at the same time )

Cheers chaps. No dashcam unfortunately. The damage doesn’t appear that bad.

I think you’re bob on @A2Steve it’ll be a day in the body shop. I needed to take the rear bumper off anyway as it’s been pre wired by @timmus for rear sensors for 18 months but I’d never got round to getting it off and the holes drilled.

In honestly, the votex also needs generally re fitting and I’ve been planning on going body colour with it anyway, so may work out ok. Apart from a bloomin stiff neck I feel fine.

Just a nudge in the right direction then, and a whiff of funding to do that that was going to be done anyway. We all need some good news, don't we?

Best,

Simon

PS Sorry about your neck.

It's bad luck for sure, but unavoidable in the modern world, with everyone in a rush and distracted by technology.

The impact looks very slight - not even popped the side corners out of the bumper from the looks of it. A bit of paint, after you've drilled the holes and it'll be good to go. No airbag deployment is always good - the rear crash sensor is very exposed on the back impact beam as you'll see when the plastic is off.
