Is an A2 1.4 supposed to sound like this?

I have got a friends A2 1.4 Sport to clean whilst they are on holiday. I have never seen one before let a alone listened to the engine. It sounds almost louder than my old 1.4TDi!!

Can you take a listen to the YouTube clip I have uploaded tonight and let me know if this sounds right? If not any suggestions on what the problem may be? It really does sound like a bag of spanners but I'm no expert.

After a bit of digging I'm presuming this is the time old problem of Hydraulic tappets again. I had the same issue on my 1997 A6 1.8T, got it fixed but doing an oil flush, cleaning out the top to bottom breather pipes and and then a new oil and filter, still is this the same fix of the little A2 1.4?
 
post this over on the German forums, please, I'd like a) them to hear it and b) their opinion.....but yes, I think you're right on the tappets, and no, it shouldn't be that dieselly. When was the last oil change?

First thing I checked, seems to be clean and at the top of the dipstick when cold.
