Itermittent starting problem

Afternoon, A2 1.4 Tdi 90 sport with an intermittent fault which prevents it starting. This is accompanied by the usual flashing glow plug symbol & engine management light. The fault code reads P0727 this apparently is "Engine Speed Input Circuit - No Signal". Any suggestions please?

May be a faulty crankshaft speed sensor. Don't know if yours is like this but often in the early stages of failure the engine may start ok from cold but may shut down / fail to restart when hot.
I think every other sensor on the engine has a default mode so failure results in the engine running at reduced power but this one will stop the engine running.

Agree with Spike, sounds like the crankshaft speed sensor. What device/software are you using to read the codes?

Use VCDS (Vag Com) and see what that reports back :)

Thanks for your reply, it has started Ok from cold but the two occasions it has failed so far it was from hot. I'm assuming the crankshaft sensor is accesible from outside the engine & not concealed within the bellhousing or similar.

New crankshaft speed sensor fitted, if it works you'll hear no more. Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

Actually we'd rather the opposite happen, let us know it is cured it so it can help someone else at a later date, and closes the thread nicely :)

It's cured, Crankshaft sensor replaced, did it on a ramp which made life much easier, although still had to loosen the oil cooler to fit it in. Thanks for the assistance.
