Thinking of putting a performance air filter of our 1.6fsi has anybody else done this and is it

1) worth doing
2) easy to do myself

cheers

It's pretty easy to do once you've got the undertray off and will allow the car to breathe easier.

Be careful not to overdo the oiling when it's time to clean and re-oil, otherwise you'll have MAF problems.

I know that Deseli has fitted one - drop them a PM for thoughts.

Cheers,

Mike

hi lisa i had one fitted at my last service and am happy with it. not sure if it makes any performance improvements but it sounds nicer on wider throttle openings-i mainly did it for economy reasons but cant really say if it helped with my consumption as i had 17" wheels fitted at the same time and that has hit my mpg by about 5-6 mpg!
cheers mike

I would be very careful of any oil type filter unless the car was designed to use these. Normally production cars are fitted with a paper element filter (no oil) for good reason - so there will be no contamination of the MAF sensor.

There is no point in doing this because to gain any performance advantage you will need to get the ECU remapped. Many years ago I fitted one to a Porsche Carrera RS and found that it made less torque and power using a K&N. When I spoke to some independent Porsche specialists they also said the standard paper element was superior unless other mods and a remap were done. If you are going to fit another filter you need to find one that doesn't have any oil in it.
