Knobs

I'm thinking of improving my knob.

More specifically, the gear knob - I'd like a new one, it's a bit worn and it doesn't feel as nice as it used to.
Are the knobs from other Audis interchangeable?

The gearknobs are a bit awkward to change over, and I don't think that the A2 knob fitting matches the others.

I used an illuminated gearknob from these guys: http://schaltknauf-forum.de/en/a2/170-audi-a2.html

Not OEM but the first variant was reasonably close (apart from being illuminated, of course). I found that the leather was ever so slightly too short, meaning that it occasionally pops out when I change into 6th.

They don't just "screw off" then? Gah.
I was also thinking of an illuminated one, yes, but if the gaiter keeps falling off that would quickly become annoying.

I think the gearknob I have fitted is an A3 8L model (ball shape - sport variant).
I wanted a red leather A2 sport gearknob, but it wasn't available anymore from Audi.
Mine is black (perforated leather) and same shape.

There was a good, relatively hidden, Finbarr Saunders joke which always makes me laugh. There was one episode where he managed to get a motorbike. In quite small text, the name on the bike's badge on the side of the fuel tank was Ichifani!

I rather like the idea of an illuminated gear knob actually, nice mod. Was it easy to fit?

This may or may not interest you, I saw them on eBay, mainly honda badge or an "R" or just audi rings but if you send a message they will whip up anything, I asked for "A2" and picked the colours, they sent me a pic of a practice one to see if I was happy then I bought it. Great seller and not greedy it cost be about £5 witch I think is fair enough. My gear knob was worn and this beat paying £20+ for a new one and I think it looks cool

From distant memory, this was what had to be done:

Pull out the existing ring & gaiter to expose the existing gearknob stem
There is a metal band holding the old gearknob to the stem - Hacksaw it off
Separate the ring from the old gaiter, but make a note of where the 'front' is first
Glue the new leather gaiter to the old ring, lining up carefully so that the front of the new gearknob lines up with the front of the ring
Wire in the gearknob to the illumination circuit (for example, hook off the ABS button's illumination wires)
Connect the new gearknob to the stem - ICT use a 3-way screw mechanism to clamp onto the flat face of the 'D' shaped stem.
Click the ring back into place, and now you are done.

It is entirely possible that I may have forgotten steps or details. There are a number of youtube videos showing the installation (although mostly in German), I would recommend watching them just to get a feel for the process even if you don't understand the language.

It was a bit more awkward than I described above, because for some reason the leather gaiter ICT supplied was a) slightly too short, maybe a few mm, leading to the problem I mentioned earlier, and b) was attached to the gearknob so that the 'front' was at about 10-o'clock instead of 12-o'clock, it had to be disassembled and moved around first. Must have been a friday-afternoon job, I wasn't impressed. But the end result looks nice.

Gordon Bennett why is it so complicated?!
Hmm, will have another think. I'm not keen on taking a hack-saw to the shaft of my knob.

Just to add to your 'knob' theme, mine's not as big as yours. but I'm after a small shiny one please, it goes on the end of the hand brake shaft, mine is broken and keeps falling off in my wifes hand......she spent ages looking for it on the footwell last night. She nearly had to ask the neighbour for help locating it........
Any offers for a replacement small knob would be appreciated!!

Thanks
