Limitations of VCDS-lite?

Been toying with buying a budget vagcom cable to investigate fault codes and whatnot but really I can't justify the expense of VCDS beyond the freeware version. Just wondering if the free version would be any use if and when I come to call on it for future projects? I'm thinking specifically a throttle body reset after cleaning it and a cruise retrofit. So far as I can tell, it's no for the throttle body reset and maybe for the cruise?

I don't think you'll be able to install the cruise control with the Lite version. Some more details: http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds-lite/index.html

I have a cable similar to the one in your link. It works with VCDS Lite, but the functions are quite limited.

you can of course spend even more than that.
