Limp mode second day of ownership oh well

Don't think the early TDI cars have a management light? Understood if there is an issue the glow plug light comes on. Mine is like that and it's a 2002 car remember reading a post I had googled when test driving my car and it didn't come on when I switched ignition on.

Maybe not then mines a 2002 also, i will take it apart tomorrow and let you know.

Should have never passed the mot I'd ring where it was done and complain

Wasting your time complaining, the spring and control arm could break anytime, and as long as the brakes hit the efficiency then it's a pass (possible pass and advise if the MOT tester can see that the disc's / pads are badly worn. The MOT test becomes more and more of a joke these days, the by word is now pass and advise (I have this first hand from a friend of mine who is an MOT tester)

The spring has been broke a while by the look of it its all rusted where the break is,if you mention form BT17 to the test station he Will **** himself its a ministry complaint form.

I totally agree, I used this very form a few years ago when I bought Smart car for her in doors from a car dealer, It had no MOT when I viewed it and test drove it. I agreed a sale on (a) the brakes being replaced as it was making a nasty noise when braking and (b) a new MOT

When I picker it up and drove home (30+ miles) the brakes when not right, so I contacted VOSA and they pointed me at the BT17 form. I threatened the car garage with trading standards and the MoT testing station with the BT17 form, surprise surprise the MoT testing station paid me for a complete set of disks and pads, rear cylinders, rear shoes and £200 to get the lot fitted and the car sales garage provided a 2 year 5* warranty free of charge.
On this occasion I could prove that the rear cylinders where leaking (shoes and drums soaked in brake fluid) and therefore the braking efficiency was far to low to have ever passed the minimum requirements of the MoT test. I don't believe the car was ever actually taken to the MoT testing station, as confirmed by VOSA when they tested the car pre of post my brake repairs.
I left it with VOSA as to what they did with regards to the MOT station and I never found out, but I did get my Smart repaired free of charge plus £200 of my trouble plus 2 years free warranty, this was the one of the few times that I have bought a car through a sales garage and I will be saving my money in the future and buying private.
