Location of a 'live' wire

Anyone know where to painlessly find a 'live' 12V wire in a TDi A2?

Looking to hard wire a radar detector - (OK i know the easiest way is to slow down!)
 
Never had a close look myself but the obvious places are behind the radio or on the steering column. Or the cigarette lighter - not sure if that's permanent or switched though.

Damn this lack of A2, I can't give any concrete ideas or solutions.

Don't drink drive! Not only is it socially unaceptable, it also harms A2's.

Thank for all the replies so far - I'll start rummaging over the weekend.

How about a live wire somewhere around the driver/passenger coutesy lights? - The detector is a cheetah type and fits over the origional mirror?

Talking of courtesy lights has anyone noticed the flap that can open and close above the rearview mirror - i assume that it's a visor of sorts?

Also whats the point of the grille type thing pointing backwards from the courtesy lights unit? - dont think it's for ventilation?

on your grill question-two things spring to mind:

ventilation if you have the map lights on for a long time (more than likely)
there is a sensor behind for the climate (unlikely, as if you have map lights on, it will get hot and give false reading!)

If you look on the forum at the recent post on red led's for ambient lighting, there is a picture of the whole unit (map lights etc)

I thought the grill thing was for the ultrasonic alarm sensors
 
I think its some sort of filter as mine is loose and theres some foamy material behind it. Quick question does anyone have wiring diagrams for the A2 I'm fitting a GPS unit and am stumped as to where the speedo sensor wire is if anyone could point me in the relevant direction would be most apreciated. I'm with rubbish, as it were, I think the "grill" is the ultrasound receiver/detector - when I picked up the car I was keen to locate these as my Lupo ones broke three times... these seem to be a little more out of harm's way [:I] The only other thing that looked remotely like the ultrasound was the two small windows in the fascia of the CD changer - but these turned out to control the brightness of the display with respect to the ambient lighting.

FACtOR: Just curious: why do you want to get hold of the speedo cable?

Getting back on topic... would there not be a live 12V cable in the bundle that's in the passenger side underfloor compartment?

I need the speedo wire so that i can attach it to the gps so it can get an accurate reading of my curent speed for pin pointing location and distance to next turnin basewd on curent speed, do you guys know where i could get ahold of the a2 wiring diagrams because i also need to locate hand brake on wire and the easiest way to locate the reverse and dip lights on wires without attempting to take the rear light cluster apart, the installer wants £100 for the installation which i think is way to expensive to just attach 4 wires which i dont know the location of. Thanks

as for the 12v its the yellow wire i beleive on the back of your radio reciever i think the green and yellow can be used too but i beleive thats for accesory (ignition on.) could be wrong about the green and yellow but the solid yellow is your 12v live.

Strange...GPS systems tell you your speed more acurately than the speedo does! Well, all the ones I have seen do. As the GPS receiver always knows where you are it's pretty easy for it to work out what speed you are doing.

ps.if you look in the fuse box under the dash there should be a (15A I think) fuse for the rear power socket...wire something in serial with the fuse.

Steve, are you sure about this.

The sensor for the CC is located above the cc panel. The grilles in the lights panel are for the car kits microphone and perhabs for the cooling of the unit since it's located directly under the roof.

I removed the unit to fit some sound dampening and I never saw a temperature sensor there.

Audi's usually have a light sensor on the dash top that gives the AirCon an idea of how hard it should work in relation to the time of day. So the aircon works at max at mid-day (sun over head) and works more mildy as the light level decreases (sun lower in the sky). I would imagine the A2 is the same.

Some GPSs such as the new Garmin 2650 include a speed input which, in conjunction with some means of sensing change in direction, effectively give you a cheap INS so you can maintain guidance even without a signal. Perhaps FACtOR has one of these?

Yes I have a pioneer Avic800-DVD unit £500 off ebay brand new[8)]...but dont tell anyone;), I need to find the speed signal as the nav works without it but is about 10 metres off because of no speed signal so no real time idea of car speed, on most cars the wire is in the car audio looms but its also pick-up able I think in the instrument panel, TMC is really nice though never been caught in traffic since I got it. LOL whats funny is that car audio specialists charge about £70 just to connect that one wire.
