Manifold change over valve

I am looking to buy a 05 TDI but the seller now informs me the engine warning light has illuminated and the code shows manifold change over valve fault. he is familiar with this fault and says the quadrant nylon gears wear, and now wants an extra £350 to fix. does this sound feasible and is this a job a fairly competent mechanic can tackle, is it accessible without removing the engine, any idea of the price of the valve. your comments will be much appreciated
Adrian, still looking for the right tdi.

I wasn't aware the tdi had such a thing - I may be wrong. The only flap in the inlet tract is the anti shudder valve as far as I know.
If he wants to sell the car the fix should be at his cost surely? What's stopping him erasing the code and saying he fixed it ? Other than it may be back on instantly-- I know both my and vonnies tdi put the light on if the battery is disconnected and the code refers to the manifold flap ie anti shudder valve. It goes back out after 5 clean runs. Cheers Mike.

Thanks Mike, he says this valve ensures the engine stops when switched off, maybe it's the anti judder you refer to, does this allow the engine to stop without a bang on compression, he deals in a lot of A2s and of course sounds genuine It's a 400 mile round trip to view the car, he did quote £5k for the car now he's upped it to cover the cost ie. £350.

Yes that's the same valve. It's quite easy to change but not sure if the cost of the part. So if he is a dealer then even more reason for him to foot the bill. He wants to sell it so if the light keeps coming up he should fix it. 5k I hope it's a cracking car as that sort on money buys very nice a2's cheers Mike

Hi,

I completely agree with Mike's comments.

£5k is at the top end of A2 prices, and realistically, at such a price, you would be wanting to expect such a problem to be fixed free of charge. I'd certainly advise not paying over the asking price for the dealer fixing the valve. In my opinion, when spending £5k, adding another £350 for a known fault just seems a bit 'cheeky'.

Please don't take my word as gospel, I'm just giving my opinion. :)

Best of luck! :)

Matt.

What a strange world we live in.
Someone advertises a car, then finds it has a fault and so he increases the pirice????

If the car was valued at £5,000 when there was no fault, how come it is now valued at £5,350 with no fault?
As i say, strange world.

I rather would look for another A2 if dealer play that way, for sure there a few in that price range.

Thanks for the promp. replies, let me explain. The dealer promised to ring me if he found an A2. he did and on the way from where he purchased it he phoned me to let me know he had it and the price would be 5k. and said would email some pics. when he did with a short description the price had increased to £5350 when I questioned the increase he then explained it was due to the engine light illuminating when he put his vag tester it showed up a fault on the manifold change over valve and this would cost around £350, or if I wanted to carry out the work then the5k would stand.
The car is at Sinfield cars Worcester but not advertised yet. It has a working open sky roof.

OK, if the car is from Sinfield Cars then that is slightly different.

They really do specialise in finding top spec A2s and seem to be OK to deal with, so this MAY be a misunderstanding.

So even though the deal sounds like a strange one, I guess it all depends on just how good this A2 is.

So it may be best to leave Adrian to sort out a deal that he is happy with.
