hi i’ve just bought a 1.4tdi for my first car, as i’m only 17 i was wondering what mods i’d be able to do that are tasteful and would skyrocket my insurance cheers.

Fit A2OC number plate surrounds.
I suspect anything else will upset the insurance company.
I know I'm an old fart, but A2s are not Corsas.

Depending on what you had in mind you may be asking the wrong crowd, but my tuppence:
Focus on improving the car’s usability if you can - the best tyres you can afford, better headlamp bulbs, a six speed gearbox and a second high tone horn are all going to make the car safer, more enjoyable and / or more relaxing to drive.

Welcome aboard James, excellent decision and congratulations on your purchase
around 2002 is the sweet spot for an A2 in my opinion.The advice of most people on here would be, keep it as original and in as good condition as possible to retain maximum tastefulness. Don't even rip out the OEM stereo, as it's miles better than any aftermarket replacement in both looks and sound, and the setup with the rear speakers in these cars is unusual.
Instead get an adapter to allow the OEM headunit to do whatever Bluetooth calls & music streaming and/or Aux-in via flylead or USB that you would like. If it's a first-generation unit (one central control knob), you'd probably want to replace it with a second-generation one (two control knobs, at either end) in time, but this would require some integration with the Canbus in the car. However, you are very fortunate to live not too far from @timmus in Lancaster, our resident electronics guru, extremely well versed in all the above, and all manner of other retrofits.

Great quality suspension, brakes and tyres will make it faster, nicer and more satisfying to drive.
The original sound system is really good, find a way to hook your phone up.
None of that needs anything different from original equipment, except a £30 Bluetooth receiver.
