My FSI Got a 'new' engine...!

Good morning all,

and seasons greetings from Italy. In June finally took the plunge and decided that my 2002 FSI had an engine that was clearly too tired to be acceptable, so I bought a FSI engine from a scrapyard and had it rebuilt from a local specialist., then when it was ready my mechanics swapped the units The job took several weeks as I wasn't in a hurry, nor were my mechanics, but I took delivery of the FSI one month and a half ago and I did a bit of a run-in for 1000 miles. At 700 miles I had the oil and filter changed and the oil looked very clean: the engine feels still a bit 'itght' but I have time to it loosen a bit. Eveything works fine now and the rebuilt engine has a nice strong 'pull'.

My little problem now is that my indicators stopped working yesterday, that's quite annoying when one is used to use them all the time. The Hazard blinkes work: I have ordered a new flasher unit on eBay, and I think that I could find the unit behind the dash cubbyhole, but is it possible that a flasher unit goes wrong? It would the first time in my like that it happens to one of my cars!

Again, best witshes to all the fellow A2 owners and enthusiasts, this community is really great.

Best,

Stefano

Yes it will be the relay as it’s a dual function relay , mine & many others I’m sure suffered the same fate.

Thank you for your kind reply,

I've bought this on eBay, quite expensive but at least available in a few days instead of waiting for Audi dealers to provide them during holiday season It's quite annoying to drive without indicators! Though there are lots of people that do not seem to care much....or do they all have faulty indicators? :) :)
Cheers

That should cure it if it’s a working example , I would test it asap when you get it , not cheap from TPS but you get 2 year warranty , around £65.00 if I remember correctly.
Cheers

Hi Stefano

Keeping A2s on the road over the next decade will probably require rebuilt engines.
To give me an idea on possible future costs, how much did you pay for the rebuilt engine?

Hi Sunsurfer,

let's say around £2500 for the engine rebuild alone, they (SORA in Faenza, Italy) provided all the hardware, pistons rings etc;, I bought the engine that I delivered them from a scrapyard for £120 and the final price of the swappping of the units has yet to be finalized by my mechanics. I'll let you know when they will send me the invoice.

BTW the new flasher unit arrived today from the Audi Zentrum Gottingen, and, frankly, I wasn't able to reach the faulty unit behind the cubbyhole. I can see it but it's tight there, so I'll have to trust this job too to my mechanics. I expect some strong words about this location of the flasher!

Cheers

Stefano
