my head is being turned by something equally as divisive

my t4 gets better mpg and probably rusts about the same . my old neighbour has a yellow one and says its very slow . if that helps
the japanese don't salt their roads so they generally don't rust-proof the underbelly of the cars so a lot of the imports are super prone to rusting 🫤

ive spent an unhealthy amount of time recently looking at the nissan cube.
more specifically the z11 which is the first lot of cubes imported in the early 00's
it's versatility, unusual styling and cult following reminds me a lot of the a2.
...there's even a caddy version which isn't too unlike the few a2 caddies about.

has anyone got any personal experience with them?

i really like it's boxy, postman pat appeal. out of context it looks like a big van but it's pretty much identical in size to the a2.
nissan released a 2nd gen cube for the uk market around 2010 - the z12 - which had rounder bits on it which for me kills the cube ethos.

the negatives are they only come in auto with a cvt transmission, and have the aerodynamics of a double decker (avg 35mpg)
they're also still quite expensive - cheap examples start at £3k and the average is about £6k so seem to hold their values slightly better than the a2

thank you for allowing me to outwardly gush over my new crush.
I quite like the Nissan Pao

i almost bought a cube today 😮

iv been keeping a quiet eye on classifieds and a lovely example popped up. it drove really nice and was really fun.

not wanting to make a rash decision i asked for time to have a think.
as much as i really wanted one, a few things didnt sit right;

they're prone to rust; japanese cars aren't required to have rust proofing

also being an import, and 20yrs old, parts aren't exactly readily available. it shares parts with the micra and note but there aren't many out there so not much in terms of breakers.

seems there's only 1 or 2 people holding the monopoly over parts and repairs so not much in the way of sharing knowledge

they have a niche community but it's deffo not the a2oc!

so all of this means iv ruled with my head and decided against it.

guess it'll have to remain as my guilty pleasure for a bit longer

Wow so close!
I remember when I got married in Japan, buying a cube was the next thing on my list! They look "normal" in Japan, but over here, whilst still looking cool (in my view) it just doesn't sit well enough with the surrounding environment.
My crush slowly became an itch, which then became a memory...

Most people go for an i3 bmw, I must admit I've been tempted by its design until I saw the unique tyres price strategy!!

Pretty standard. They are exclusively Japanese imports because there is only a handful of places you can get second-hand right-hand drive cars. I haven't seen one modded per se but they are mostly used for what they are supposed to be. The market is flooded with mazda 2's at the moment.

From experience with Japanese imports you get:
1. Non-operational radio (frequencies are different) and sat-navs/headunits are in Japanese.
2. Parts can be different, e.g., smaller brakes, inconsistent part numbers, etc.

These are a couple that are currently on sale:

I do like the rear window pane arrangement, etc. My partner cannot stand anything that even remotely looks like an A2 if that helps!

they're even more expensive over with you! im guessing the importing costs quite a lot more?

They have a Jatco CVT, right?
Those have quite a bad reputation. As there is a modding community for them, is there a guide out there how to manual swap it?
That should make it decently reliable in case one pops up later for a price you cannot refuse :)

im not sure if theyre jatco per se, but but the ones with a cvt box are known to be a bit flakey unless well cared for.
a few of the members recommend changing the fluid every year with the service which may be overkill, but it shows how temperamental they can be!

@roc-a-rhol This place is a complete hole. All of the cars that are imported are 100% totaled/repaired and almost certainly have gone on a mileage diet and have dropped 60k miles before they left japan. Most of the imports are advertised as low as 6k miles. To give you an idea dealerships have been importing cat a and b vehicles for years and then they sold them in the local market normally. There was no legislation to force the importer to show such information on the vehicle's records.

There is a special one-off taxation that you pay for importing a non-EU manufactured vehicle. New or used. If it used and older than 5 years old you pay an additional amount every year on the road tax which can be as high as 600 euros on top of the usual road tax. Toyota currently offers 10 years warranty on all of its models. This makes it the most sound option for the local market.
