Need help tracing a roof leak

Hullo everyone.

I'm trying to track roof down a leak which is leaving some of the headlining soaking / dripping.

We have a 02 TDi with functioning opensky. In good nick. Regularly service by A2 specialists

Headlining on the offside from the C pillar back is soaking following heavy rain.

The sealant along the offside edge of the fixed glass roof panel had partially perished and it's been resealed with mastic twice. Most recently about a month ago. Other seals seem ok. .

I simply can't work out where the rain is coming in! Needs a good downpour for it to come through.

Any pointers? Keen to avoid a mouldy interior!

Thanks in advance

Richard

Most likely your OSS underneath needs to be resealed, this is quite a common thing. They are sealed along the edges and with silicone underneath the roof itself and I've seen it quite often where the silicone has failed to seal the roof properly, causing wet and saggy roof lining.

Thanks for that - so it could be a failed seal underneath, rather than the sides? Are there mutiple such seals, or are some more prone to failure than others?

cheers

The ones on the bottom are the ones you don't want to fail, but they are almost always the ones that do, so it's almost certain to be that.

Out of interest who are the A2 specialists? Recently been trying to work out who across the country currently could claim to be so.

Not a long list is it, really.

This is where we apply the silicone when we refit the OSS's, if the original tape has failed it will leak (this is the rear corner). It would have originally been sealed with a black mastic tape (just seen in the picture) which goes hard and brittle over time, this is why we use silicone.

@Kleynie knows more about OSS than most here , including myself but a quick relatively easy job is to make sure all the drains are connected to the drain tubes if any are fitted and that they are free of any blockage.

There are no tubes, but it drains from the rear and each side of the windscreen.

We’ve cleared the front ones down each side of the windscreen using a thin plastic prizing tool before

I've tried to do my own at the front with some aluminium wire and can't get the blockage to fully loosen. It's about half-way down the screen, so an awful lot of rain has to happen before it's an issue. I might take the wing off and go from the bottom when it's warm again and I've excavated the car from the snow.

Tom ( timmus ) gave me useful information on oss rain channels cleaning.
I have a A2 dipstick filed down the plastic tip and it fits the rain channels too.
