New A2 Owner - Here is my A2

Talbys A2 Diary

Hi all, just thought I’d introduce myself and show my new (to me) A2. With over a year of searching I finally found one that I was happy with. Don’t get me wrong it still needs a little bit of love, and elbow grease, but I just couldn’t say no to the spec. I won’t list all the options but you should be able to tell from the images attached. They are the photos used to sell it by the garage but I’ll put some current ones up once she’s fully cleaned inside and out.

I think the colour is ‘ebony black pearl effect‘, but could someone on here please confirm it? I know that it’s a metallic black.

One issue I am having is the alarm coming on at seemingly random intervals. I’ve been searching the forum and I’m just hoping it doesn’t mean a new comfort unit. It comes on if I have the interior alarm sensor on or off which tells me that it might be the sensor in the rear window. I think the first step will probably be getting it to a VAG specialist, but I’m hoping it’ll just be a case of a new battery.
I’ve already started replacing small things and generally trying to clean the years away, so far it’s going great and I’m happier every minute I spend on it.

I even found some treasure when cleaning; a pocket calculator, one Belgian franc, a 5/32 pin punch tool (which is a little worrying) and a ‘Peavey’ guitar amp logo. They were all dotted around the under the boot and under the foot wells, strange but a great feeling having them all out. Really makes me wonder what the cars gone through, but maybe its best not to think about it.

Anyway, I'm Jon and I plan on updating this thread whenever I make any changes to my A2.
I'd also like to add a huge thank you to the forum and its contributors for already being amazingly useful.

Hi Jon, and welcome to the club.

First of all, I'll confirm that the colour of your car is indeed called Ebony Black. This is the metallic black rather than the piano black.

It looks to be a fine example. From looking at the photos, it would appear to be a 2002 1.4 SE with OpenSky, heated leather Sport seats, multi-function steering wheel, BOSE and rear parking sensors. Very nicely spec'd indeed.

I look forward to you updating this thread as you develop the wee machine. Enjoy your car after your long hunt.

Tom

Thank you both and thanks tom for confirming the colour and you would be correct with the spec.

It's a shame really that the buttons on wheel suffer the same fate as the air con ones. Probably even harder to find and fit replacement ones too.

You can actually buy a new switch assemby for each side, but they are about £85 each. So it depends how much they bother you.

That's great to know thanks. Only the right hand side needs attention but I don't think it's £85 worth of irritation. Maybe eventually down the line but I think I will get handy with some paint well before then.
I have a couple more irritating issues that need more urgent attention.

Jon, your signature picture is great. Did you make that yourself? It really is your car! (and mine, as I also have an Ebony Black A2 with OpenSky!)

Thanks, I'm a graphic designer and at work we have a database of vehicles drawings as part of my job is to design vehicle vinyl wraps.
The original drawing was a little rough around the edges so I tidied it up and coloured it etc.
The plan was that if I had a crazy idea for my car I could go about it properly and see if I still wanted to do it.
I must say you have great taste!

Excellent! I like your train-track avatar, too.

When I bought my car, it lacked many things that I'd have ideally liked. I've retro-fitted a lot of them, but knew changing colour would be difficult. So, I had to find one in Ebony Black, cos it's the best! :p

Correction, ONE of the best! :)

nice motor welcome to the forum.

On the alarm side of things you might want to check the service flap sometimes that can set the alarm off if its not secured properly, just a thought.

enjoy your motor

Yes, of course! Like everyone else, I have a selection of favourites and appreciate it's a hugely subjective matter. I'm also a massive fan of Dolphin Grey and the nicer red ones!

I agree with the Dolphin grey and red but I also really like the deep green but I never saw one without the tan coloured interior, not a fan especially when dirty.
Retro fitting was always what I had planned on doing but some things would be near impossible, like the panoramic roof. Then I eventually found this one and it ticked almost all the boxes, super pleased.

As for checking if the service flap was shut, it was one of the first things I did along with the doors and boot with no luck, but thanks for the advice.
It had it's cambelt and waterpump changed just before I collected it, I seem to remember reading somewhere on here that if the car is raised then it can mess with the alarm and it will need resetting..
It's really starting to get annoying now.

Hi and welcome to the A2oc and A2 ownership. You have a lovely example there.

If you need a scan done to find out what's going on I have vcds. I bring it along with me to socials so a good excuse to meet some fellow enthusiasts and get a scan done.

We have waxstock, the skid pan expeariance and Adi coming up.

Cheers

David

Thank you so much for the offer but Audi driver international is the only one I'm available for and I really don't think I'd be able to put up with it for that long.
If I get it all resolved by then and I'm generally happier with the car then I'll try and make it down but If I haven't got it fixed I don't think the people down there would appreciate the irritating beeping.
Plus I would have probably been driven to insanity.

A bit of a stupid question, but have your windows been stut when this has happend? I had some windows open when it was hot and this set the alarm off.

If it is your ccu then German A2 owner Lau dose a repair considerably cheeper than a new unit.

Funnily enough I made a few offers on this car to the dealer who was selling it a few weeks ago, he must have sold it to you between my offers. I made one last bid and was informed it had sold :-( it was well priced for the specification..... still on the hunt for a good condition, black with opensky

Did the dealer sort out a new cambelt for you ?

My windows have been shut when the alarm has activated. I know the interior sensor works as I did the lock up with the windows down and wave your arm inside trick and the alarm sounded.
Thanks for the recommendation of Lau, if it comes to it I'll contact him.

I'm curios if it is the service flap as one of the previous owners has had a very slight knock on the front bumper as there is a small section of splintered paint under the grill and a very very small shallow dent.
I was wondering if the service flap switch on it could have been dislodged or something along those lines when the incident occurred. Could someone tell/show me where is the micro switch located on it?

Hi James, you must be the guy up in Scotland the dealer mentioned. He told me that he wasn't comfortable selling it to someone who had yet to see it. I was told on the Friday it went on sale that I was the first to call and book an appointment to see it. The only time I could make was the next day in the Afternoon. When I was getting ready to leave I called to make sure it was still available and he told me that they had already had a viewing in the morning and that the couple who had seen it made and offer that was declined and then left saying that they would contact the garage if they were willing to part with the asking price. He was awaiting a call from them as I left to go down there.
When I got to the dealership after a stressful drive he said that they still hadn't called back! After giving the car a real reach around we agreed on a price with them also fitting a new cambelt and waterpump and giving it a 6 month tax. We then arranged to pick it up when the work had been made, which turned out to be the next Saturday.

Good luck with the hunt and I'm sure you'll find a good example without a dodgy alarm and a frutella in the passenger side seat rail. That was fun to remove, it still smelt of strawberries.

Yes indeed I am the one from Scotland who was trying to negotiate a deal without looking, the spec and the service history spoke for itself and I had even priced the cost of flight.... My only concern without looking at the car was the cambelt...well done negotiating it (when i originally called the dealer did not know about the cambelt issue on a2's).... Not such good news for you about the Dodgy alarm (fingers crossed the fault is tracked down)
