Just to say thank you to all the contributors on this great forum. You have been invaluable in my research in finding a car which suits my needs, compact but roomy and feasible to repair at home after minimal outlay on specialist tools. Good looks (the A2 won hands down over the roomster) And most importantly the A2 is still modern enough to be survivable in an accident. Having previously served as a firefighter for 25 years, i have burnt into my head how important modern safety measures are. And still remember attending what we now call the Mini classic, to be normally confronted by the ubiquitous bump in the roof from the steering wheel punching its way through into the roof, after a frontal impact. So for me classic cars were not a family option.
So i have Purchased my first A2 which our family Love. So our A2 was formerly owned by russelbridge and i think you might know it as the A2 with the Passat MYP 6 speed gearbox.

The A2 did have that all so common VAG squealing starter so that was removed and striped down and re greased today. And now i don't have that squeal as the bendix retracts.
I served my time as a mechanic after leaving School and it feels so good to get back to using tools. So no more combie tools and spreaders for me, no more “B post rips” and roof removals, it's back to spanners and diagnostics with a smile. :D

A big thank you to Russ and Bernadette and thank you for your hospitality.

Nice post glad you still like turning spanners, that's all I've done on mine so far hope yours is less problematic

The TDI is a very reliable car even by today's standards. If you've got a good one it should make for very economical purchase.

Still got my oil leak, still getting occasional limp mode (could be n75 valve) it's a pig to work on (no room) bit of a choppy ride but it's ok is suppose

Hi,

We have six TDis in the family, and being Dad and Grandad it is me that they turn to when they need anything fixing.

But these are soooo reliable cars I have not been pestered at all, apart from "Dad the MOT has expired" or "I have a flat tyre" and in my own 15 years of ownership I have never had a breakdown or major fault.

Yes, there will be one or two cars that have problems, that happens to every car, but in 46 years of driving (including everything from minis to Bentleys) NOTHING has been as reliable and or more suitable for a daily driver than the A2, nothinmg has come close even..

That is my honest experience and on a forum like this, you hear from the people that have problems more than the people that don't have problems (for obvious reasons).

If anyone is unlucky enough to have a problem A2, please don't think that it is the norm (especially if it is a TDi).

Luck of the draw imo some are good some aren't, I still got to get to the bottom a few problems on mine it always starts but it does bug me keep going into limp mode a windscreen wiper that makes a right racket, and oil leaking everywhere despite new intercooler oil filter pollen filter rocker gasket air filter I keep ha I got troubles, just my car and most of turning spanner so far had been routine maintenance I'd have another in a heartbeat maybe one with less miles.. mine was cheap enough and the help on the forum is excellent with friendly advice

I feel quite lucky that I have not had any major issues with mine, aside from the recent driveshaft, but that is something of a wear and tear part so I don't consider it a major issue. If i was a bit handier with the spanners, I would have done it myself, but I would sooner leave some jobs to the people who know best.

Just had the starter done as well - again, not something I would attempt myself but it is sooo much better when you don't have to listen to that squeal :D
