New Audi A2 1.4 SE Petrol Owner from Norwich. Few questions and thoughts.

Had a look in the drug stashing cubby holes under both the footwells. No amp anywhere. There's the bolt hole which looks like it could take one which is annoying!

So i'd have to add the external amp. What's involved with that? If I buy just that ebay amp i'd need to also re-wire the speakers and power to the amp? Not just a case of plugging it in right?

I also guess there are no head units out there with 4 outputs built in?

Thanks Jay

Hi Jay,

the Mk1 Chorus is the only 4 output one I know of that would be compatible with the car.

To fit the amp you would need to run the speaker wires to it, the two line outs from the head unit, power supply and the switched positive from the head unit to signal the amp to turn on.

The connections would be as follows:

AmplifierRadio 20 pin connector
1Left speaker -
2Supply positive (*)
3Supply earth
4Line in earth3
5Switched positive6
6Right speaker +
7Left speaker +
8
9Line in left1
10Line in right2
11
12Right speaker -

(*) Fuse 2 - 10A permanent supply

You may find that another member has an amp and / or plug with some wiring going spare after a BOSE system upgrade which would help you sourcing the right connector for the amp to get you going. An ad in the wanted section of the forum may pay dividends.

So done a little bit more investigation work tonight. Turns out i've not got rear speakers at all. So my Chorus 1 isn't outputting to the rear. The manual for it says it supports rear speakers but in some models only the front speakers were fitted and the fader optoin is set to 'OFF'. So I guess I could add rear speakers?

So now i've only got front speakers and to be honest i'm pretty happy with the sound they produce. They fill the car and plenty of bass production etc. This opens me up to more options in terms of head units?

Thanks Jay

Hi Jay,

if you only have front speakers at the moment then you can simply swap to another head unit like the Concert and won't miss the lack of built in rear speaker amplifier with that model. You can always also add extra rear speakers at a later date if you wish.

The Chorus and Concert units are pin compatible so they should just swap over.

When obtaining a replacement unit you will need to ensure that you have the unlock code for it (4 digit number) as the unit will be in safe mode after not being connected to the power.

The ebay listing which you linked in the earlier post said that the radio didn't come with a code, but it is possible to obtain a code using the unit's serial number.

I think it might be a configuration issue. Most units are configurable to support front and rear speakers. The coding is done with VCDS.
