New headlight sock installed.

When I ungraded my headlights to projector lenses and HID, there where traces of 100 W bulbs in them. The reflectors where burned close to the bulb. The result of using 100W bulbs for the driving light might be negative after some time of usage. Especially in country's like Sweden where driving lights are on even in daytime on hot summer days while driving without any natural cooling of the headlight.

100 W bulbs are illegal also in Sweden. On the other hand all modifications of the headlights are illegal in EU. Even the LED position bulb. The Headlight is type approved as a whole and no part is to be replaced with something different.

This mean that my modified headlights are illegal but as long as you do a modification that have any negative effect on other r
oad-users I don't care. But before the Swedish MOT I have to swap to standard headlights.

Thanks! I will go for the 55W philips instead.

I see driving light every day here that must be over 55W, it is like staring into the sun on the modern cars ppl drive around in :)

Hello

I´m quite new A2 owner, but vags and Audis are familiar. This headlight sock meltdown seems to be quite typical as I have that too in my car. I tried to find oem part number for socket from oemepc.com but couldn´t find it. Probaply not available as a spare part. Where can these be bought? Ebay? Thank´s if you answer.

Unfortunately, I think they are part of the headlight assembly. I was lucky to get a spare from another member.

Thanks for your answer mate. I thought just this way. I´ll try to find some from scrapyard. There aren´t such many A2´s in Finland from where to take, but i´ll try :)

Finally got round to installing the new tube that Dave gave me. Looks mighty fine now.

The old one is completely US. Hopefully the new LED bulbs will not get quite so hot.

And here is the internal damage

Is there a straightforward technique for getting these socks out of scrap headlights without damage? The ones I have are very firmly in place (could they be glued?)/

I don't think they are glued, the little lugs half way up hold them in place i think. My old one had melted away so it came out easy. The replacement came in a box in the post.

Thanks, although I'm no further on.

I've got a scrap headlight that is only scrap because the clips are broken, and I'm trying to remove the sock with no joy. It rotates a small amount, but nowhere near enough to unclip. Anyone here know the secret?
