Hi all,

I’m the new owner of a 2001 A2 TDi and am extremely happy to become part of your community. I was so grateful to be able to research your posts prior to purchasing and am looking forward to all the help and advice shared by everyone!

I live in Hampshire and although I’m a dedicated VAG fan, this is my first time with A2 ownership. I bought my A2 for the princely sum of £600 from a lovely chap in Sussex after seeing it on Autotrader.

The car has done 181,000 miles and has a patchy service history with wear and tear matching the miles, however it has a new MOT and does drive extremely well, so I am looking forward to making some improvements to spruce the ‘silver pig’ up and give it some deserving love.

I have read several threads so I have some ideas how to proceed, but any other tips would be extremely welcome.

Firstly, the windscreen wiper! Despite being a Bosch item in reasonable condition, it makes a hell of a racket and smears more than it wipes. Any tips?

The Chorus radio is ok and has reasonable sound quality but I would appreciate rear speakers and a CD player, so I’ll be looking to upgrade to a Concert or similar.

The temperature gauge shows that there may be a fault with the cooling system as it barely registers over 60, I take it the most common fault is a dodgy thermostat?

I’m quite surprised by how perky the engine is but am equally tempted by the tuning possibilities outlined in several threads. The service offered by Depronman sounds great if it is still available?

I’ll sort the sticky and slightly notchy gearshift at some point, thanks for sharing the YouTube link. Any other tips in relation to this?

Great to see such a positive and proactive forum, l look forward to being a part of it!

David

Welcome! I’m sure lots of help will be along presently.
Your wiper - is there much clearance between the bit holding the blade and your window or is there a definite tilt to the attachment with the bottom quite low? Give it a wiggle - any play? The metal mounts wear down and round off so blade is held at a poor angle - best guess. Easy to repair with rivnuts and washers or replace with a later style of aero arm.

Hmm, I I’ve looked at the wiper arm and the wiper appears to be level ish.
Perhaps you can give your opinion from the attached photo...

Well I would ditch the arm & wiper & go for the upgraded aero wiper & corresponding arm not a cheap upgrade for the arm but superior.. or u could go for the aero blade that fits your existing arm .. not Audi oe but much cheaper ..

As for the low reading on the temp gauge ... it may not be the thermostat but it could be your temperature duo sensor ... you need a reading with Vagcom to be sure ...

Plus 1 for the Aero wiper arm, there have been a few for sale from members recently at good money (under £25)
The early arm which you have suffers from wear to the rivets which also act as pivot pins, meaning that the end were the wiper blade attaches is sloppy and therefore cannot present the wiper blade at the correct and constant angle to the glass
I can refurbish the original for you, which involves removing the rivets, reaming the arm bushes to a clean round size and then making custom stainless steel rivets. Once re assembled all the slop is removed and it functions as Audi originally intended, the stainless steel will wear less than the soft steel rivets, and so should last much longer. I also machine an helix in the stainless steel rivet to allow oil to get to the working surface. A few drops of engine oil twice a year should keep the wear at bay.
Drop me a PM if you are interested, I might still have a spare that I could recondition and send you then you send me your worn unit in exchange
I repaint the wiper assy matt black so it looks new
Total cost is £30 + P&P

Your temperature problem could be thermostat or temp sender unit, as already said a VAGCOM scan is needed to establish which, or change both. I thing the sender is about £7 and the thermostat £4 so not a major investment and VERY likely to be one of these two components
Does the heater blow very hot or just warm ? if hot then likely to be the sender unit, if warm then the thermostat

Remap - I offer several method for remapping you car, loan ECU service is likely to be the best for you, all the info is in the remapping thread

Cheers,
Paul
