New wheels?

I need some new 17 inch wheels to replace the original 9 spoke wheels on my FSI. I know Audi don’t make the wheels anymore and I haven’t had much luck on eBay or breakers. Also my near side headlamp is getting all misted up with a water leak. Any suggestions? I am in the Bristol area.

Try looking on the Market here for a second-hand set of wheels with tyres to put on your car while you have your existing wheels refurbished. Or as you say there are always wheels on eBay. You're looking for 5x100 fitment, 5.5-7J width, offset around ET35. Beware though, unless they've just been refurbished, all the 17" RS4-style 9-spokes will be as bad as the ones you have. Your best bet for comfort and lightness are the 15" forged 7-arm style from the A2, or pepperpots from the early A3.

Wheels from the contemporary 8L A3 and 8N TT (as well as various other contemporary VAG vehicles) are also usable.

The following two 6.5Jx17 ET40 rims from the Skoda Scala and Skoda Kamiq could be used with either 205/40R17 or 205/45R17 on the A2.

Fitting a 205/40R17 or 205/45R17 to a 6.5J rim would give a little more ride comfort and rim protection, compared to the standard 7J rim.

According to one source, they weigh about 10kg each. However, 17" rims are never going to compare well on weight with the super lightweight 6Jx15 ET38 Pepperpots as they only weigh about 5.7kg each.

The centre cap could easily be replaced with an Audi version.

The silver version was available new on ebay last year for just over £100 each. However, this low price no longer seems to be available. The black version was always over £150 each.

It's common for the VW Up! community to fit Michelin Pilot Sport 5 205/40R17 84Y XL to their 6.5J rims, with apparently good results. Michelin CrossClimate 2 is also available in this size, which would work better in the colder months, not just snow.

Below, I've linked to the Vredestein Quatrac 5 in size 205/45R17 as it's one of my favourite all-season tyres. It's a non-directional tyre, which is now quite rare for an all-season tyre. The latest Quatrac 6 is a directional tyre, although the older Quatrac 5 is still available in some sizes.

Another advantage of the Quatrac 5 that I've linked to below, is that with a V-speed rating it isn't massively over-specified with regards to the speed rating, unlike the W and Y speed ratings. Over-specifying the speed rating might cause the tyre's sidewalls to become stiffer and therefore the ride harder.

If you like, (as I do, very much), the 9 spoke wheels, fitted as standard on the A2 Sport, buy a used set, get them refurbished, then sell your originals. That way you can simply swap your tyres onto the refurbed wheels. Sounds like you don't have a problem with the ride on 17" wheels, and neither do I.
Mac.

Thanks for all the help and advice. I have found a set of tidy wheels from a Mark 1 TT locally. They are 225/45 R17s. Will they fit an A2?the car is on its original 205/40 R17s. Thanks

215/45 on 16" should be fine, but I think with 225 width on 17" it would depend on the offset as to whether they rub or not. However with their greater rolling radius coming from both the width and the aspect ratio being upsized compared to OEM (205/40), they're certainly going to overcompensate for the known speedo error on the A2. It would be under-reading 1-2mph even by 30mph, so you'd need to keep it beneath the limit through all speed cameras in case they are not set with any margin of error.

215/45 on A1 10 spokers certainly foul on the front chassis legs
Must be pretty marginal at that width, maybe down to the rim offset? 215/40x17 on the Sport RS4 9-spokes at 7J worked a treat on my ex-yellow Storm, and that was lowered 25mm. But that all adds to the evidence that 225 width isnt a good idea.

Is that 215/45R16 fitted to a 7Jx16 ET34 rim, or 215/45R17 fitted to a 7.5Jx17 ET36 rim?

I suspect the latter, because even with the front wheels in the straight ahead position, the inside of the 215/45R17 tyre fitted to a 7.5Jx17 ET36 rim would be about 5mm closer to rubbing something on the inside.

Add the 1" extra outside diameter of the 17" tyre, ie. 0.5" extra radius, and it would be a recipe for rubbing, ie. when you turn the steering wheel to full lock.

Actual width of tyre
215/45R16 fitted to 7J rim = 213mm
215/45R17 fitted to 7.5J rim = 219mm

Do they foul on just one side?

If so, your steering rack might not be centred, although 215s are always going to be a tight fit.
