OK, I've been driving my A2 for 3 days now, and have a coupla quick questions. I'm sure these'll be answered in a jiffy, I continue to be impressed at the amount of knowledge on this forum!

1/ I've read bits (on this forum) that talk about heaters. 'Webasto' crops up. What is that? It's mentioned quite a bit in the thread about increased fuel consumption in winter. Is there a heater in the climate control that can heat the cabin before the engine has reached temperature?

2/ I have the OpenSky roof. The rear section of the roof appears to be permanently shaded, whereas I can slide the shade for the front section forward and back as with a regular sunroof. Is this standard? Is the rear shade permanently fixed?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Phil:

1. Webasto heaters are no longer fitted to the new A2s - only older ones have them. Someone somewhere on here mentioned a date. Do a search and tick the archive box... the new ones have a smaller electric heater. Only diesels have them because diesel engines are too efficient and don't have as much excess heat as petrol engines to give to a heater. Hence under 5 degrees in winter the electric one kicks in. You can cancel this by pressing the ECON button if you really like cold and want to save power! I suggest not!
2. I have OpenSky as well: it is fixed and if the front one is open the rear one is double shaded - really stupid! Have you seen the new Megane's? It also has a double roof BUT there are two roller blinds from the centre - one to front and one to the back... They are solid as well so no light comes in when they are open... very neat. You can however carefully remove the front sliding one if you really want to in the A2...

Thanks Johann, that explains it!

I had deduced (dear Watson) that there may be an electric heater in the climate control, but when I went out the other morning and turned on the heat as soon as I started up, no hot air. However, it was nowhere near +5c, more like +8c, so I guess my A2 decided that it was'nt cold enough to turn on the auxillary heater.
I have to say that it was correct too. I left the climate on 'AUTO', and as soon as there was some heat to be had, up went the fan, and I was warm as toast. Very clever, very lovely.

Audi did perhaps miss a bit of a trick on that OpenSky roof blind. Dont get me wrong, its bloomin' fantastic! But it wouldnt have taken too much effort to make the rear blind retractable? Having said that, I would more than likely leave it closed if I had a choice. I'll shut up now...

Cheers!

hehehe yes... maybe if ever they do A2 mark 2 they will use the Megane type of blind!

That for me is the best thing about climatronic... set-and-forget... it gets the car warm but never too warm as it constantly regulates itself via its thermostat... in summer it has a variable compressor for the AC which is always engaged and just varies the rate at which it is doing its thing... thus you never ever feel that jerk when it kicks in and out...

Just remember to vacuum out the little grill above the cc. That's the intake for the thermostat.

Ooh, nice one Dennis. I did wonder what that little grill is! Now I know, I shall be sure to give it a good suck at the earliest opportunity.

Cheers chaps!

You can remove the sun shade quite easily, it looks quite spectacular with all that glass.... it can be seen here: http://www.audi-a2club.de/thread.php?threadid=918&sid=
I would have posted the pictures directly, but I can´t upload pictures from work...:)

Bye, Frido.

Your right Frido, that does look nifty!

I'm sorry, my German is awful. (Read non existent!) Can you give me some bullet points on removal and re-installation of the screens? Is it a quick job? Have you done it? Do they go back in OK if need be?

Danke!

I have not done it myself, I will try to translate the whole thing (it just deals with removal, but I think reinstallation is the same):

Procedure is as follows (translations from the german forum, instructions courtesy of Member A2TDI):

-----start instructions----------
1. Open the roof. Then close the sunshade. When viewed from the outside, you can see 2 fittings left and right. (First picture in the thread)
2. These fittings can be removed from the track quite easily. Now you can remove the front part of the sunshade.
3. Now you have to remove the frame with the rear sunshade. The frame is a T-Profile and only clipped in. Take a screwdriver and wrap a rag around it. Then push it gently between the frame and the roof from the inside and you should be able to remove it. It is clipped into 6 clips along the length of the car and 4 clips along the width. This is what the profile of the frame looks like (Second picture in the thread)
4. The frame is then resting between the glass and the car´s roof and can be pushed outside through the open roof.
------end instructions-----

These are the instructions as far as I know.... if you harm your A2, it is not my fault..:)

Bye, Frido.

Thanks Frido, I really appreciate the translation! I dunno whether I'll do it yet, but if I ever do decide to, then I now know how to! [13]

Many thanks again.

I think it looks great!!! I do however like to close the shade in the summer and leave my roof slightly open... thus hot air can escape but leaves and things can't fall in... BUT I don't like the fact that the rear part of the glass is obscured by a double net at the moment when the screen is pushed back... hmmm... I think also due to British summer only lasting from the 2nd of June to the 4th of July (2003 exepted!) I may just live without it the other 300 days of every year!!! hmmm...

thanks Frido...
