Not a happy morning

Unfortunately I've just taken a phone call from my wife, while I'm at work, advising someone has driven into the passenger side of both my A2 and my wife's Stilo Abarth.

At this time I don't know the full extent of the damage and will be making my way home shortly.

The other vehicle drove off, but there are witnesses to the incident and full vehicle details have been taken.

Hopefully the police will do something other than provide a crime number.

Very unhappy at the moment.

Jeff

Argh no :(
Glad no one was injured, and also glad that full vehicle details are known. Let's hope the witnesses will stick to their guns and agree to witness statements being taken.

Fingers crossed on the extent of the damage. There have been too many stories of A2s being killed off of late :(

Oh that's rubbish news. Let's hope the police do their job as ther really is no excuse. Fingers crossed you can get the cars sorted out quickly. Gutted for you Jeff all the best mike

that's bad news. At least the damage is only on the machines. Fingers crossed police will catch the bad guys and it is all sorted soon enough!

I'm sorry Jeff, that's a very crappy thing for them to do. I had the exact same thing happen to me with my escort. The people Opersite saw it. And gave statement to the police. They did their job and nicked him so I did get it fixed so there is hope.

All the best David

So sorry to hear terrible news, Just hope damage is not too bad.Iam sure police will be able to do find them with all the information
All the best

Hi All,

Thanks for the kind words, txt's and phone calls.

I'll update fully this evening (I'm back at work now), but the outcome is better than I initially thought or imagined.

The damage is superficial, but really annoying nonetheless.

Unfortunately the police are worse than useless, and I’ll be putting together today’s experiences for the information of the readership, hopefully aimed at saving others the anger and frustration myself and Glyn have endured today.

The decent bit of news is the drivers’ husband obviously has some degree of morality, as while I was at home taking photo’s of the damage he turned up and admitted fully liability and has offered to repair all damage immediately to the highest standard possible – and in fact his repairers are collecting the Stilo Abarth tomorrow morning.

I’ll update later.

Cheers

Jeff

Awful news Jeff, i'm gutted for you mate. Give Glynn a hug from me.
Anything you need Jeff - you know where i am.

I'll add my thoughts and best wishes. Horrible experience. Hope its a distant memory soon as possible and both cars restored better than new. :)

Hi All,

Again thanks for all the kind words and thoughts. We will still be attending this weekends social.

This part of this post is a synopsis of what occurred today, and is only being written to inform those, who have the belief the police are caring and consider victims, just how wrong they are in this assumption.

During a morning call to my wife (9.10am) she asked me to hold while she answered the front door. Two neighbours advised her they had just witnessed a black Audi convertible career into our cars and the woman driver appeared drunk. After driving in to the cars she was seen to swerve across both sides of a small village road, narrowly missing a school bus. Both witnesses independently obtained the vehicle registration number.
After my wife had verified both our cars were damaged I asked her to call our local police station to report the incident.
After over 22 minutes of being on hold (after dialling 101) she got through to someone. My wife explained the situation and requested an officer attend the scene to photograph the damage and take statements (my wife had confirmed the witnesses were going top be available).
At this point my wife was firmly advised that, as the other party had fled the scene of a road traffic incident it was policy that police attendance would not occur.
My wife was informed she had to attend a police station of her choice, with all of our documentation (driving licence, insurance, current MOT and proof of ownership), where these documents would be checked for validity. Once this had been done the duty officer (civilian) would provide the necessary forms for my wife to complete, after which the incident would be logged and investigated.
My wife was then informed she had 24hrs to attend her chosen police station and report the incident, and failure to do so was an offence that could liable her for prosecution for failure to report a road traffic incident.

Obviously my wife had explained that the 2 vehicles at her disposal had been damaged in the incident and she had no other mean of transport. She also advised we live in a rural area (although the person she was speaking to was from our closet town, so understood this). My wife also advised she was unhappy driving either vehicle as she hadn’t been able to photograph them in situ and didn’t know if they were safe. She was met with a warning that failure to correctly report the incident could be deemed as an offence.

My wife called me to explain and advised she was going to get a lift from a friend to comply.
Well, if I wasn’t really angry before, I certainly was now.
I rang the police station and spoke to the same member of staff, who was as equally belligerent and without empathy to me.
After a brief discussion with her, I advised her how appalled I was with her attitude towards victims, obtained the name and collar number and advised her I wanted to speak to a senior officer.
She had already advised me our conversation was being recorded, which I advised was perfect.
After approx. 10 minutes I received a phone call from the senior station officer, who did have empathy and was very understanding of the situation, but pointed out the policies and procedures are ridged and his operative was correct with the advice she gave.
My phone call with him lasted approx. 30 minutes, so a lot was discussed, but the upshot is this is not a local policy, but national, and unless there has been serious injury or there is life-threatening circumstances, this will be the situation should any of you kind folk suffer a hit and run incident.

To rub salt into the wounds, the senior officer advised he would listen to the digital recording of my phone conversation with his staff member and inform me, by email today, if he feels she was lacking in an understanding approach to our issue and what action he would take to rectify – no email received
And
The husband of the drunk who caused all this advised he contacted the police to report his wife for leaving the scene of the incident and the police said they would attempt to come round and interview her. However he got a phone call about 2 hrs later advising they were too busy, so wouldn’t be attending.

Makes my blood boil.

Jeff

looks like the feds are learning well from the politicians, me thinks.
look good rather than do good.
appalling, expect that from an african country, not a 1st world society like ours!
chin up Jeff.

I'm sorry Jeff for your treatment, that's terrible. I surpose not all police forces are the same. I was lucky with mine they could not be more helpfull. Maybe i should send them over to yours to teach them how it's done. As to the treatment of Glyn that makes my blood boil as well.

So I guess it's ok to drink and drive now as long as you don't get caught at the scene you are ok, and the police proberly can't be arsed to follow it up. What's this world coming to?

Cheers

David

yer the cops are a waste of time unless someone is injured they just dont wanna know. i was in the same position not long ago, car hit while parked had witness and filled out police report....no joy! completey wasted my time!!!!

Very sorry Jeff with all thats gone it does drive you mad the lack of response from the Police what are we paying them for ????? its one of them cases your b=getting beat up by 10 people in the street and you call them and they'll say well ring us back when its over so we can come round and take a statement off you as long as its not T time as the traffic police are speed ing through town now with our Fish & Chips and we wouldn't want them to go cold

Hope you get sorted soon

Phil

i witnessed a police car on the busy A1060 essex regiment way in chelmsford with two fine officers of the law consuming the largest soft drink each from a burger chain outlet whilst driving at 60mph ! hmmm i wonder what that would be classed as -driving without due care and attention?
blood boiling

wow, that's very poor!

I can allow some tolerance and understanding if a busy local station doesn't spare time for incidents where no one is injured because there are more serious crimes to fight. But offering no empathy to victims, only to turn it around to warn them it has suddenly become their duty to go to a police station or could face prosecution is outrageous! Where is the fairness in that?

Seems ridiculous - are they saying that a suspect leaving the scene of an accident while driving dangerously, possibly under the influence, doesn't warrant at least a visit to the victims?

A similar situation happened to my friend last month after a minor bump in traffic, and the daft woman just drove off. The police were on his doorstep about an hour after he reported it to take a statement :) Theres big issues to be addressed in some forces then!

Sorry to hear about the damage to your cherished cars, truly appalled with the lack of empathy and the threat of prosecution! Makes me wonder if the police can make a distinction between victim and offender.
