Did mine on Wednesday evening. I couldn't find this thread so I had to make it up. The job took a couple of hours but that included an oil change too.
You have to get the car quite high in the air so you can crawl under the floor pan.
The sensor is quite tight in the exhaust pipe.
I would recommend fitting the sensor before routing the cable because you want to avoid twisting the cable when you screw the sensor into it's housing.
I had a permanent engine management light on that I was able to clear with VCDS but it would come back within a few hundred miles.
The engine appears to be a bit more responsive. I'm hoping mpg will improve a bit too.

Seeing as everyone says how good Stoke Audi is, I rang them and ordered one: £186 posted. I am relaxed about drop links and ball joints/brake pads etc,. but there's no way I would go pattern on this, especially given the engine's sensitivity to sensor signals...

Hi tch, see above post on sensor replacement. I would just buy this from Audi direct. If you ask nicely they always give 10% discount on list price.

Hi TCH - I have just received the new bit, so before I put it on, here is what is written on the metal part of the sensor (from top to bottom):

Hi Simon, thanks for the information. I will check around & see if anything else is compatible at a cheaper price. Our car only has had one fault code pending for Nox sensor being out of range but randomly comes up with other codes that turn on engine warning light - this week it was a camshaft sensor fault, fitted new one but fault code still coming up occasionally. At present I am reluctant to buy new Nox sensor. It is a pain, after 11 years with the car having no engine emission or warning light problems it has started playing up. Regards TCH.

Maybe my memory playing tricks, but I'm sure I've read, on here, that the Polo one fits, but the leads needed extending, using the leads from the old sensor.

Following my nose I came up with part number 0 258 007 355 which is claimed to be compatible with our FSIs but I noticed it says 5 wires but apparently ours are 6 wires. This last bit of information, worth reading the next 20 something posts, came from here...
NOX (oxygen) Sensor!!
Our Nov 2002 1.6 FSI had the engine management light come on in April this year. They ended up replacing the NOX sensor (part 8Z0906261)- cost £300.

Original part is NGK/NTK. They are OEM for bosch. Japanese got there first.
You have to drop the exhaust a bit and the heatshield behind it to fish it through. Just bend the heatshield slightly and then bend it back to normal. Be careful not to scrape the insulation off the wires on the sharp edge of the heatshield.
I recently got a working Nox sensor from A2Steve, who saved my bacon. I found that it was useful to tie a bit of string to the connector end (in the passenger footwell) before feeding the cable through the hole in the floor. The string can then be untied from the old connector, tied to the replacement connector, and pulled back up into the footwell so that the cable follows exactly the same path as before.

Great thread to come across as I'm now in need of a working Nox sensor for our car.
I wonder if a source of new ones has been found by the experts on the forum? Jan 2008 when this thread started and £122.96 for a new Nox sensor seams like yesterday to me, if only they were still available for that reasonable price since they're only the size of a spark plug with wiring..........
