OEM head unit

Hi Peter, I'm assuming you have a Chorus I or Concert I head unit, in which case you will need to replace with similar. Audi Tradition (the link you supplied) are very good for OEM parts, so if you don't mind paying then this is a fair bet. You can probably find one cheaper elsewhere, but just not in probably as good condition.

My A2, which is now working, has a slightly dodgy head unit. It’s the original I think, but the volume control is very temperamental.
Does anyone know if this unit, which says it’s for an A/S3 of a similar vintage would work / fit? Because if so, for £70ish for an as-new unit, it seems like a bargain, relatively speaking!

Thanks :)
I am fairly certain it will not fit without modification, as in my experience the fascia panels that holds the buttons on A3 units are wider than our A2 units. It might well function correctly, I don't know, but my guess would be yes, maybe! Also don't forget Audi Tradition have a hefty delivery charge.

With eBay units not cheap I would pursue a local repair option. If it works now and again it could be simply dry joint.
I know Timmus is away/busy but I would ask anyway and you could send it to him if he can help.

When you say ‘temperamental’ - does it sometimes drop the volume to a very low level when you try to turn it up? Like it goes from 15 to 5 from a slight brush upwards? Or is it more than that?

It’s more than that..it’s bascally very very loud, or almost silent. And there’s no control. If you do manage to get it to an acceptable volume it’ll stay there, but of course as you go faster the temptation is to turn it up...

Same failure mode of the volume potentiometer.

Is that a relatively easy repair do you think?

Though I did then remember I have got an Audi Delta headunit in the shed (which I think I bought for the A8 but never fitted). I wonder whether it would fit / work? I’ve got some stereo removal keys somewhere so will take a look!

It cannot be repaired. It’s a fault in the volume eeprom and you will need a replacement IC chip. Not easily found. Mine had the same problem and I replaced the unit with a concert 2. Since my car is a 2001 I had to create a CAN-Bus feed from the instrument cluster (two wires) into a green mini iso plug for the radio. Plus enabling it with VCDS. Quite straightforward.

Actually, I just purchased a chorus 2 from Audi Trshop. 35 eur - real bargain. I have installed a Bluetooth module so I don’t really need the CD. So the concert is for sale if anyone is interested. Like new with code. Original A2 unit (8Z).
