OEM type reversing camera

As I have factory fitted reversing camera on my A1 and am in the process of retro fitting a wired camera to my other A1 I started to think about a similar one for the A2.

These cameras are integrated into the soft touch handle in the hatch and wired through the tail gate forward to a suitable display. The A1 uses the MMI and is displayed on there. Alas the A2 is not so equipped and a separate display would be required. I do know the RNS-e units would accept a camera.

I have found a couple of wireless camera handles but have yet to check the compatibility to the size and wiring plug of the A2 hatch handle and have to look into how exactly these need to be wired in.

Consider this a proposed project as progress will be slow due to other commitments.

Here is an example of the camera handle..

If this temps someone else to try it themselves fantastic and let us know the progress.

Just a though: try to get the camera that is compatible with the rearview mirror screen. I have this in wifes Toyota (from factory, not retrofitted) and it was really weird at first, but we got used to it and now it is just fine. I have linked directly to the part of the video where I show this:
I would really hate to have some non oem display sticking out on my cars instrument panel...
Also, one other advice. If buying chinese RVC, do check the comments because they usually have a very small view angle and they are basically useless. 120-130 degrees angle is useless. Go for 170 at least. And check if there are any comments regarding the picture quality in the dark. That is also a painpoint of cheap RVC.
One other thing: wireless RVCs can have a lag, so I do not recommend them. I would go for a wired RVC.
And I think that I have seen here an option to mount RVC at the end of the headliner on the top of the rear window. Not really an elegant solution, but doable.

As said the handle cameras are good. RNS-e can use that screen. I already have a built in Garmin satnav and that can use their own wireless cameras. Just do not want to mount a camera inside the tailgate and have to remove my shades hence looking at options for the handle type.

As far as I know there are no rear view mirrors from Audi that are capable of a camera input.

Evening Graham,

This is something I’ve been slowly looking into. To save having a separate screen then the RNS-E PU can be coded as an R8 to have the rear view camera displayed when reverse is selected.

Clearly coding the RNS-E as an R8 will remove the A6 power functionality that is required in the A2. Im positive there is someone who could help us out with a specific firmware to overcome this, who is currently away on holiday. I’ll approach him in the coming weeks if you like as this is something that I’d like too.

First for me is to get the OPS display on the ColorMFA then rear view camera on the RNS-E. I’m close to getting having the OPS display on ColorMFA but need to finalise the necessary installation adjustments before I provide a full write up on it.

I’m also get to find a suitable camera integrated into a boot release handle for the A2 and was considering adding the camera to the Club number plate surrounds as this very concept is already available. A wireless arrangement would be nice though if is was reliable.

More than happy to work with you in the background on this if you want.

Although Craig @craigyb hasnt logged in for a couple of years, he created this thread back in 2012 which shows its entirety possible. He opted for the number plate holder camera which was the wired variety. I’m sure utilising a camera that’s integrated into the handle or number plate light will work just as well.

Kind regards,

Tom

I forgot that many of you have RNS-E in your car. That is just perfect. :)
Yes, but even more of us don't ...
Has anyone got a spare hatch release mech, to investigate the possibility of creating a custom part to accommodate an available camera?
Mac.

Just to add to this there is also a second type of camera that is built into a number plate light but from the ones I have seen they have a totally different fixing to the A2 number plate lights.
