Ok, I'm pretty much sold on the A2 - convince me!

Hello everyone!

Firstly, I must say how much I've enjoyed reading the A2OC forum pages over the last few days. I've learnt SO much about the A2 already; I've also received emails full of useful information and advice from Skipton01 and have also been struck by how friendly the 'atmosphere' is!:)

As yet I am A2-less but am, as mentioned in this post's title, pretty sold on the idea of having one as my next car (a 1.4 tdi would be my choice). However, being a cautious soul I don't make decisions lightly.

This is where you come in.

If any of you out there have time to send me a quick reply, could I you ask you to consider this question: What is the one thing (or what are the things), that you think would really sell the idea os A2 ownership to me?

Thank you for taking the time to read this message.

With kind regards,

Michael Davenport.

It was ahead of it's time when it was launched, and very expensive too, but now makes a sensible buy and is right on the zeitgeist of the times, what with it's 60 mpg and £35 road tax. There are now other flimsy little cars that achieve the same, but they don't have the class or solidity of the A2, which makes it pretty much unique.

I have one of the run out "Limited Edition" TDi's, and I think they are the pick of the crop if you can get a good one.

Cheers

what a car

only had mine a few weeks ok about 3 or 4, I have owned a few cars in my time. but my wife and I have been getting coments since we bought it. a few from friends but most from total strangers, mostly love your car etc no bad coments yet. was parked outside halfords in coleraine went in to buy a vainy mirror for passenger side not for me . ask the girl behind till if i could try mirror for size, "What that siler/blue audi over there" wife and I look at each other yes thats the one , next thing girl comes over with us and has a good look round it I just love this car writes a2 on her had top tell hubby . what a picture out side my house Audi A2 (mine) and Ford ka (Wife) Yes I like strange shape cars :)

I can agree with nearly everything that has already been said on this thread. I would add that it has the practically of an estate car without looking boxy. I took the rear seats out the other day to move an easy chair - truly cavernous:

the looks are excellent. The best bit, however, is that there is a wealth of information and thought, improvement and tuning across the 'net that will be difficult to replicate with anything else. There's a big thread elsewhere talking about how to adapt the 3l's underbody components to the rest of the range for dropping fuel consumption (5% improvements are mentioned). Please tell me another car where you can freely get the info to pimp your motor to save fuel (not make it go "BLING") and then pics and illustrations on how to do it? The guides on here on how to fit forgotten trim parts, the knowledge about how to remove doorcards, light switch pinouts and the ability to find someone else who can help you diagnose what's really wrong with the car using a laptop and OBD: is this really available for a specific model somewhere apart from here? Never mind the crew of apparently crazy people who go live under nylon for days at a time...

The ability and sheer volume of information contained in the major A2 sources make it the car for me that I would want to push on and on, safe in the knowledge that I don't need a haynes manual, because there's a forum and someone's probably had it before.

Yes, it is a pain sometimes. Yes, it does GLUNG. However, it was way ahead of its time, sips petrol rather than drinks it, and looks amazing. That it can seat four in comfort with a good-sized boot is a bonus from where I'm sitting. There are lots of areas you can improve, but it's a pretty damn good base to start from.

It's also practical and very cheap to run. What more do you want from a car?

Bret

I can vouch for the practicality had an ikea bed including the matteress in the back of mine and the rear seats were only folded up.

And as has been said before the best most informative and friendly forum any car owner could want.

Hi Michael & welcome to A2OC!!

The previous replies to your question have more or less said it all - the A2 is 'first class' - make that 'world class'.

Seeing that you aren't too far away, if you fancy a good root around an A2 and a spin in my remapped TDI drop me a PM.

Good luck in your search and future purchase.

Darren

Well, my A2's only been gone just over a week and I really miss her. I agree with all the previous comments and would add that A2's have 'character', something which seems to be missing from most present-day cars. Can't wait to get back into A2 owning, hopefully in a year or so's time.

Best thing:

Knowing that when my wife drives the car (which is quite a lot ;)) she is happy, safe and comfortable. She wasn't keen on our last car (2003 Astra GSi Turbo) due its silly performance and hard ride. In our A2 (known as Spud) she has found her perfect car and that is worth a fortune to me.

Worst thing:

Knowing I can't go and buy a new one when this one wears out. Honestly, I can't find a bad thing to say about it.

Hope you find a good one, they are worth their weight in gold.

Good luck,

Dave

PS. I got 2 armchairs in the back of mine with the seats out. It is like a tardis!! :D

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your PM.

I did try to reply to you, but apparantly you are not set up to receive PMs?!

At any rate the content of my reply is below.

Darren

Hi Michael,

You are most welcome.

It sounds like you are looking at a rather well looked after, low mileage A2 today. I hope that the price and finish live up to the hype. Please do let me know how you get on.

The A2OC is indeed a very friendly place to visit and socialise, (on-line and at the social events), so never be afraid to ask any question - large or small.

Good luck today and if you do need any advice or a second opinion just drop me a line.

Best Regards,

Darren

Hello Darren,

I just wanted to send you a quick PM to thank you for the warm welcome, your comments, an for the kind offer of a root around in your own A2.

I'm actually going to test drive one today (a 2001 1.4 tdi with a full history, 45k on the clock and a 3 year warranty!) - I have to say I'm rather excited!

I will let you know how I get on.

With kind regards,

Michael Davenport.

Hi Michael,

Sorry to hear that your viewing failed to live up to expectation after all.

You appear to have your profile set up to prevent you receiving PM's?! With regard to your latest PM to me; drop me a line with your contact details and/or resolve your profile set up and we can sort something out.

Cheers,

Darren

Thank you!

Hello everyone!

Thank you for all your responses to my thread.

Your comments have well and truly convinced me.

It's obvious from the replies that the A2 is a car held in very high regard by all, and I'm really looking forward to becoming an A2 owner as soon as I find a 1.4 tdi that ticks all the right boxes.

With best wishes,

Michael Davenport
