Ongoing banging :: Suspension?

Hi, just thought i would share my experience recently in case any of you had a similar concern/issue.

Car: 2001 1.4 TDi now 50,000 purchased with 24,000 in 2010.

History: For as long as i can remember, the car had an almighty thump (metal to metal sound), that occurred on the drivers right side when going through a pot hole (deep). I had posted on here before with suggestions that it was a possible drop link or ARB. The drop links were changed, thanks in part to Brett, but unfortunately the noise remained.

So, i took the car to the Audi Center Airport in Vantaa (Near Helsinki). i described the noise, and they went to work.

Visit 1) New suspension (8Z0411314B, 8Z0413031AB & some screws) - €675
Also they changed the wheel bearings on front right, and when i mentioned the ARB they said it was ok and just replaced the bushes

Month or so later, noise still there so returned

Visit 2) They had the car for 3 days, and gave me a courtesy car. They changed the parts above to other side to see if that would isolate the issue, no joy. They replaced the droplinks with OEM drop links, no joy. They replaced the ARB, no joy. They also replaced something at the top of the suspension, i will list the parts below:

6N0412249C x2
N 10207804
N 10106402 x2

I could write what the above are titled in Finnish but not sure that would help anyone here..

Summary: After second visit, they said they had changed all parts that would be connected to the noise, and the only other thing they suggested to change was the springs (mentioned they couldn't see the circular dots on them, and said they didn't think they were OEM, and were a little short - these haven't been changed in my time and so curious as to why they would have been changed with only 27,000 miles on) but they were not sure that would solve the problem so that would be at my discretion. They said, that it was not dangerous, the suspension was just at it's limit and that is the sound, metal on metal. I was asked to pay €429, and additional spring change would be €450 if i wanted to. They offered spring change at €250 as good will because of previous €'s spent on first visit with no result. I recognized that they had spent 3 days on the car trying to solve the problem and only request was to pay for the change of ARB which we might have had to do in the near future anyway. I was ok to pay that...

They also recommended that the wheels i have 16" 205 45 might be contributing to the problem. When i questioned why only that side, they said there is more weight on that side of the car.

But, still the problem isn't solved. So, does anyone have any experience with this? strange that i have never heard of anything on here about a similar issue.

I don't mind paying money to get something fixed but this has totally perplexed me and it appears the Audi Center. Mechanic was an English Guy so no problem in communicating.

the car had an almighty thump (metal to metal sound), that occurred on the drivers right side when going through a pot hole (deep).

Check for play at the corner of the bonnet nearest the windscreen. The metal tang that locates in the "shoe" on the top of the wing can sometimes have play and the resultant "metal to metal" sound can reverberate through the chassis and sound like a suspension issue. It's probably not that but it could be something simple and quick to check. If there is play, simply pack out the bottom of the shoe with some thin plastic strips until it is a tight fit and all slop has gone.

Also have a look at the engine/gearbox mounts. This has also been an issue with metal to metal clunking noises in the past.

HTH.

Thanks for the info guys. Mechanic said no problem with the engine/gearbox mounts...

Could it have anything to do with a Bump Stop? they replaced the shocks with OEM, and are saying that my springs look a little short for OEM so would recommend replacing those but cannot guarantee it would make a difference.
