Hi Phil ... posts #24 and #39 ... the old bolts were re used and torqued ... the console bolts I would assume as well as the steering rack, only the long pivot bolt is new at this point I believe ... maybe the old console bolts were beyond use at this point? At long last I've read this thread from start to finish. The stripped console captive nuts is speculation I believe The use of a windy gun could have under or over torqued the bolts. All the bolts were new. The existing garage are unlikely to have pinned the old console and didn't set 4 wheel alignment.
Hopefully this is just a matter of a competent garage loosening the bolts, setting everything up, and torquing correctly. They will advise if there is further work to damaged threads.
The threads are vulnerable to galvanic corrosion. Aluminium oxide builds up and strips out the female thread as the bolt is removed. So if the console was used it could indeed be stripped before it was fitted.... if a second hand console was used maybe the threads were damaged on it also and possibly the new pivot bolt has nothing to torque too ... just a theory.
These bolts are standard 10.9 and are very reusable. At this point I have to cover my butt by saying, Audi recommends they are replaced. So doing it my way rather than Audi way; unless the bolts have been in and out repeatedly or are corroded they should be fine to be reused.Hi Phil ... posts #24 and #39 ... the old bolts were re used and torqued ... the console bolts I would assume as well as the steering rack, only the long pivot bolt is new at this point I believe ... maybe the old console bolts were beyond use at this point?
