Please educate me on diagnostics

Hello again,

I've tried searching but without knowledge of terms etc I can't seem to find any information. Is it viable for me to buy diagnostic scan equipment to use with a laptop, or is it better to pay others for the service? If so, what will I need?

I'm fairly competent with mechanics and would like to do more myself, if there is any reading worth doing please reccommend it as I want to get clued up.
