Poor radio reception

So were cars that did not have a factory Audi radio released with the options sticker in the gap where the diversity / nav unit would have been as the OP picture?

Looking at a list of 2003 A2 options, all radio options had an extra cost, except the active speaker system. So it was possible to purchase an A2 without an Audi CD/tape/option. My 2001 1.2Tdi had no diversity unit, at least not in the "normal" place; when I bought it in 2007, it was fitted with a Panasonic radio which was most likely original.

@paolo_audi is in Italy, so maybe build standards differed in mainland Europe?

I think that cars that born without radio have a different setup that cars native with radio. My a2 has been built only with front speakers and antenna connection but any radio.
I want to add one more info that might be useful. I have seen that central upper parts ( three rows ) of heated rear windows dont work. Could this problem be related to the poor fm signal ?

You are not helping us much here post a picture of the radio in the dash. What do you mean the upper three rows of the rear window don't work?

Yes there are around four different set ups and I have only ever seen this one once before. But the diversity unity must be there somewhere. It needs that to convert the

I believe the lower section is the antenna only, and not part of the rear screen heater. Only the upper section is heated.
I'm guessing there is no antenna amplifier in your version, so, adding an aftermarket amp at the radio end (will need 12 V supply)
Mac.

You'll need something like this:

The amp is already in your car (or should be - it was in mine). Hopefully there are no faults and it just needs a 12v supply from the above.

@RAB thanks for your pdf. I have read that four speakers are standard for all’ A2. But mine has nothng in rear door and no connection on radio socket. It means i miss cable for rear speakers.
I will buy the aerial adapter in order to send 12v through antenna cable an hope I can get an improve.
If no improve I have to remove trunk pillar and check if antenna booster is fine...

Paolo, four speakers were standard on all models except the 1.2Tdi, as shown by the pdf. That was for 2003 though; it might have been different for earlier models.

Yes probably olders like mine 2001 have only two. Another job to do ..

With poor radio reception and rear screen heater not right does that suggest a poor boot lid earth? Test with a temporary jumper lead directly with the battery earth.

Andy

@Andrew from where you suggest to make this test ? From heater ground pin ?

Sorry I am not an electrics man. I have no idea how the rear screen heater is earthed but I did read the aerial amplifiers are earthed through the metal of the tailgate itself. I would test by using a jump lead with crocodile clips from any shiny metal point on the lid, you may have to remove the the interior lower boot lid trim, and the other end directly on the battery earth. Are the rear number lights working/dim?

If you have a non-Audi radio, you won't have a 12v supply to the amplifier (via the signal cable) for the aftermarket radio, so it's never going to work well. That's almost certainly the problem.

RAB

Earlier A2's with the Chorus radio cassette only had the 40 watt two front speaker system, where as the Concert CD system had the 80 watt system with the rear speakers ?

The rear screen heater has it's own earth cable, which runs from the C Pillar through the flexi boot, on the hinge line, to the hatch.
The antenna amp gets both it's 12 volts supply, and it's earth via the coax, from the radio (Audi) or an after market feed like this:
as @RAB says, that's probably all @paolo_audi needs to improve reception.
Mac.

Most radios have front and rear speaker outputs, so run two cores from the radio, to each rear speaker position, and fit a couple of mid price, full range units to the vacant positions.

Good Afternoon Mac,

Re the amplifier earth, I was remembering a post by ajsellors, a knowledgeable chap, here, I assume this in the context of a standard Audi radio setup. Paulo has still not said if his radio is Audi or aftermarket.

Paulo, please take a picture of your radio as per audifan's request and a picture of the inside lower boot lid with trim removed. (The trim essentially pulls off but does need a lot of persuasion.)
