Purchacing and programming a spare key

Hello Sarge,
Yesterday I had my case nicked and in it was my only key to my A2. The dealer's fee for a new key is astronomical and I live in M/cr so I cant get the car to you.
However we have a laptop and a Ross -Tech VAG com interface lead (Hex+Can) and Ross-Tech 10.6 software and an unprogrammed key. Can we get the SKC with this stuff? If so how? Willing to contribute! Please help if you can. Judith

Hi Judith, Sorry to hear about your issue. I'm afraid whilst you can program the new key with your Vag Com (full version) you won't be able to get the SKC with that software, therefore still a little stuck. What/Where is M/cr? what engine and fuel is the car?

Cheers

How to do remote learning?

I successfully made the key pairing but now I've also bought the remote part and checed the coding is same as my original key's (8Z0 837 231 / 355029, 433.92 MHz).

I tried following the Ross-tech guide for remote matching:
http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/vw-remote-matching.html

[46 - Cent. Conv.]
Enter group "007"
[Go!]

Mine reads 1100 in the third field. So I conclude this means positions 3 & 4 are occupied by paired keys.

Then I've tried following the prcedures of locking & unlocking doors and pressing the buttons quite the same way as indicated also in the first post of this thread: No response or indication by car, remote remains nonfunctional whatever I do. Clearly I'm doing something wrong...

I was first thinking the new key might not be functional but my other car's remote key happens to have similar codes in remote and same thing with this key I cannot success pairing it to the other car.

As the last resort I tried clearing all remotes first as indicated in the end of the ross-tech guide. However, it seems somehow I cannot do this: when saving "0" I have an error message and the original remote remains functional and nothing is changed.

Would there be someone willing to help and recap what needs to be done for successful pairing? Is car giving some indications while pairing etc. There is many things in Ross-tech guide that remain in general level so it's difficult to know how procedures and steps should be understood in case of A2.

Thanks so much for your speedy reply! Car is 1.4 diesel.
We can get loads of information from the car using Vag Com (full version). Could we send this information to you that would enable you to get our SKC?
This would be a miracle if you could.
Regards Judith

Forgot to say that we live in Manchester but visit London frequently. We wd like to come and see you when we are there if its ok with you and we have your contact details. We would come in the A2 if we can get it to go.!

I don't like to pinch jobs off you Sarge, but you have got Mike Skipton in mancherster and he can sort your keys for you.

Cheers

Hi Judith, Unfortunately there is no information that Vag Com can get from the car to enable decoding of the SKC. This is an entirely different side of the electronics where Vag Com is concerned. Sorry.

Your welcome to visit me for the service and as David pointed out, Mike will be able to give you your SKC as well as Me :)

Right, If you have made sure that the key number is exactly the same, with the 355029 being the important bit then next part is going into Vag com do what your doing but, put 1 in as the number of remotes (even you have more than 1 remote), press test press the lock button on remote and it will say 'recognised' on vag com screen, and then press save, do this again for the second remote, again put in 1 as number of remotes for the second one and do same press test, press lock button on remote and it will recognised again press save, exit and all should be ok.

I have had one car that no matter what I did it and no matter how many different remotes I tried, would only work with it's one original remote, suspected Convenience Unit.

It worked! Adaptation --> channel 21 and new value 1. Then press test and the lock key of first remote. Vag com tells the key is recognized. Then save the settings and do it again for second remote. Note it is required type 2 for new value once pairing the second key. Otherwise it will erase the first key pairing.
I was curious and tested it is possible to pair a remote for two cars so that both are operatinal simultaneously. This means only the key is programmed to work with the vehicle and not vice versa.

How specific does an extra key need to be?
My key has the part number: 8Z0 837 231
There is no letter after this.
Would other keys such as the: 4DO 837 231 K work?

The part number is identical apart from the model code for the car.

How significant is the final letter and how do I find out which letters my car would support?

I am thinking of making a new spare and assume until coded it would at least open the drivers door manually. Is this correct?

Just wanted to mention that I had a spare key made this afternoon at WOM automotive - yes a Sunday afternoon. They supplied a blank transponder and carried out the programming to match my immobiliser. My other new style key was not affected whatsoever. I supplied the cut blade which I had done earlier at Timpsons the shoe repair place. My new style key was done three years ago by Mike Hill aka Skipton. This was a spare key and I had two versions. One was from a 2002 model and another which was for my 2005 car. I brought the wrong 2002 fob with me this afternoon but this did not matter in the end. The keys are in two parts. The bit with the blade connected to it is the transponder part which contains an EPROM to be synced to the immobiliser. This requires knowledge of the PIN or SKN code. This is where WOM automotive came in to program the transponder. Once programmed it will start the engine. The other part of the key contains the battery and is the remote control. When I returned home I swapped the transponder part with the 2005 remote control part and everything works fine - lock/unlock-ignition and hatch. Thanks Rob for your help today.

Hi sarge, is it possible to make me a spare key and post it as I'm in Manchester , if not is there a local member who could do this for me thanks in advance

Hi Buddy, what engine and year is your car? Usually it's only possible with car present.

For what it's worth I have just bought a good quality pattern remote and new key (5 year old lost the last one) from a chap in Devon. He trades on eBay as key_service and his email address is [email protected].

The cost for supply, cutting (based on a photo!) and delivery was £47.50; Ipswich Audi paired it with the car for £36.

They warned me that Internet keys are often poor quality and difficult to pair: apparently this is the first internet key they have ever had instant success with.

They also complimented my wife's car and gave my son an orange juice :)
