Replacing the Thermostat

Noticed for about 6 months that the engine (1.4TDI 90HP) never actually reaches normal running temperature. In fact it takes about 30 miles to get within 20% of normal temp. I suspect the thermostat is stuck open as the fuel consumption has got slightly worse too. Can someone confirm where the location of the thermostat is so I can consider whether to tackle this myself or get our local garage to do it. Cheers!

And if I recall correctly the bolts holding the stat housing have the usual hex heads but with the addition of allen key sockets in them. This then allows it to be inaccessible with two different types of tools...

And make sure you use a genuine Audi replacement stat. I had all sorts of issues with cheaper copies what with incorrect temperatures, incorrect fitting etc. It's detailed on a thread somewhere but I'm afraid I can't find it.
