Revs dropping out

I've had problems with my A2 off and on for about 8 months with the revs dropping off for a split second. There is no rhythm behind when it happens, and when it is on a motorway it is quite frightening. Sometimes it doesn't do it for a few hundred miles, then it will a few days later. It has been in and out of the Audi garage - they just stick a machine to it and cant get to the source of the problem

However, side affects seem to be carbon in the engine - i have had to have the EGR valve cleaned as it was completely blocked up, and in January the spark plugs were clogged with carbon and had to be replaced. Any advice of how to get to the root of all of this? I am sure they are interrelated.

Thanks

Ralph.

I hope you don't mind me joining in on this thread as my first post here.

My wife has a 2002 petrol 1.4 A2 sport and we've had this problem since we bought it. It will randomly lose power with no common circumstances. It can be on the motorway, and which point thankfully the vehicle will jump start itself again, or it can be in a queue, at which point it stalls. Climate doesn't seem to affect it and it restarts afterwards, although with a nice array of warning lights on the dash including traction control and ABS.

VAG com shows various random faults following a stall - some engine related some not. All can be cleared.

Things we've tried:

Possible bad earth - I've cleaned the earth contacts near the ECU, under the dash and to the cam cover. No difference.

Sticking Throttle body/clogged EGR - cleaned both...this seemed to make the stalls less severe, but hasn't stopped them.

I am interested in the above suggestion of a crank sensor, as one of my wife's work colleagues also has an A2 with this problem and the garage tried this but it didn't stop it.

We've just sourced a second hand ECU for £100 and will try this next - the reason for this being the random array of fault codes - for example after one stall it threw a fault with the electric windows.

I will report back regarding replacing the ECU, but in the meantime I am open to any other ideas.

Cheers,

Beef
