6. Memory Cards

All cards need to be formatted as FAT32. There are different specifications depending on whether you have a Mk1 (192 part number) or Mk2 (193 part number)

RNS-E Mk1 Units (xxx 035 192 x)
  • SD Card, supports up to 4GB - BUT it needs to be an SD card, NOT an SDHC as these do not work. Tricky to get hold of, as often advertised as SD cards, but when plugged in turn out to be SDHC.
RNS-E Mk2 Units (xxx 035 193 x)
  • SD Card, supports up to 32GB - Cards can be SD or SDHC.

7. Music Formats
  • Music needs to be in MP3 format only, although WMA is nominally supported the units cannot support Digital Rights Management built into most WMA files output from Apple's iTunes service. So if you have iTunes or Macs/iPhones then you will need to do some conversion on most files. (I will attempt to find a solution, and link here).
  • The folder format is pretty open, moving through the folders in alphabetical/numberical order, and files in the same way.
Limitation: The total filename length cannot exceed 72 characters (including the folder names and the .mp3) Anything over this length will just be ignored
Example:
  • Artist Name\Album Name\1. Track Name.mp3 will be okay
  • Full Artist Name\Full Album Name\1. Full Artist Name Again - Full Album Name Again - Track Name - and the name of the Remix is a really bad idea as an example.mp3 will be probably not

8. Part numbers (Mk 1 or Mk 2?)

As discussed earlier, there are two main types of RNS-E Units, identifiable by the last few digits of the part number. To explain, a short lesson in Audi part number is probably a good idea. They are generally formatted as :

  • XXX - (a three letter/number code which relates to the car model/derivative) - Example 8Z0 is for an Audi A2 (all models), 8D0 is for Audi A4 B5 models built between 1994 and 2001.
  • XXX - A three number code relating to what the part actually is
  • XXX - Another three number code, the second part of what it is, usually relates to major revision version numbers
  • X - A 1 or 2 letter code relating to revision number.
So, a typical A4 RNS-E Mk 1 unit would have a part number of 4B0 035 192 - 4B0 for A6, 035 for RNS-E, 192 for Version 1

When purchasing a unit the ideal units are different depending on whether you are getting a Mk1 unit (192) or Mk2 (193). The Mk2 is a better unit, featuring better cooling, a revised, higher resolution screen, faster processor and support for larger SD cards. Both units use the same

Ideal units are:
  • Mk 1: 4B0 035 192 S from an Audi A6
  • Mk 2: The best one is XXX 035 193 B, especially if you have a full DIS cluster as these interface properly with that, but were the last to have the extra speed pulse input to keep the unit "moving" if satellite sight is lost (ie in a tunnel or undercover etc.), other revisions will work, but you will lose this facility. These units require a little more wiring, and coding through VCDS but give the best results. They are however the hardest to find, and generally cost the most.

Perhaps a section in iPhone / Android connectivity for music? I know it’s not straight forward but it’s something people would be interested in.

Maybe also TV tuner setup?

Could you fix the part numbers. 8D0 part never existed for RNS-E MK1. I have sent you can complete list of parts, codings and DVD part numbers

8PO is A3, not A4 as stated
8E0 is A4
4B0 is A6 and is the best MK1 unit to buy as it should work immediately in an A2 without a recode

No such part number 8E0 035 193S it does not exist

I have access to by a RNS-E with part number 8P0 035 193 E
I have the original 2DIN RNS-D unit with Bose&TV.

What functionality will the "193 E" unit be lacking that the "193 B" unit does have?

Hey, is there anyone who's tried web-based alternatives to navigation discs, like this site offering navigation DVD ISOs that you can burn into a DVD to then feed the unit, or this custom RNS-E firmware that apparently allows you to store maps in the SD card slots (which leaves me wondering what they are there for if not maps?)
Evening Mars,

Have a look through my Project OEM thread (apologies now for it being quite wordy) to understand more about the functionality of the custom firmware you linked above. I along with many others have been running it our units for some time now. It is just incredible what can be achieved with some dedication and I’m very happy with the recently available FW300 Beta v1 that I have in all 4 RNS-E PU units here.

Currently there is no option to use a different language of navigation software inside these great units.

If you conduct a broader search about what’s possible with the RNS-E, you will come across CarPC builds that have touchscreen and all the latest features that you’d expect from a head unit of today, it’s not something I’ve decided to do yet but have a spare RNS-E PU and Mac Mini ready to go should I ever feel the need to try it. A lot of work for little gain for me personally but it’ll certainly be of interest to some I’m sure.

Kind regards,

Tom

So essentially just gutting an RNS-E unit and building your own in its shell?

With my idea to turn the "fake" rectangle atop the dash into a flip-up navi, it sure would be to me! :)

Glanced through, and seems well worth a read! Will look into it in the coming days.
