RNS-E Upgrade - Completed!

Thanks Ben & Spike!

I could potentially come along to the next social event (in Cov), what date is it on?

Last night I realised that I might not have DIS. I haven't actually picked up the car yet (it's being taxed, etc) so I was going on memory. I'd wrongly assumed that if there was some kind of electronic display between the speedo and rev counter the car had DIS.

Mine looks like this picture:

But I gather DIS looks like this:

So, does that scupper my RNS-E plans? I'm not too bothered about the lack of nav instructions appearing on the DIS but will this mean I won't have GALA to hook into? The RNS-E needs this for speed input doesn't it?

Ian.

Hi Ian
I dont think the lack of DIS stops you fitting RNS-E sat nav but obviously you loose the direction arrows and junction countdown marker which I find very useful. You should still get the voice instructions via a front speaker and combined with the map display this will still be a worthwhile system.
As Ben indicated, I had to add the Can high and low wires from the back of the instrument cluster but I think these are only needed to get the sat nav and radio info to show in the DIS
Symphony1 (cars built before May 01 according to the wiring diagm) already have the Gala speed wire connected. This only allows the sat nav to calculate your position if the gps signal is lost - in tunnels for example.
Same applies to the reverse signal wire - which I did not bother to add.

Any thoughts Skipton

Cheers Spike

You're pretty much spot on as usual Spike - I didn't bother with the reversing wire either.

The GALA wire is a must, as is an A6 donor RNS-E (the A6 is the only type of RNS-E which calculates speed from the GALA rather than via CANbus).

You should ideally connect the CAN wires, which are used to operate illumination and security of the headunit, but they are not absolutely needed. However, seeing as you'll most likely be removing the instrument pod, you might as well carry out this part too.

The voice guidance will be active, and should be enough to guide you smoothly around the mess that is the UK road system!

Cheers,

Mike

Sexy Sat Nav

Skipton if people get the parts i think this is a buck or two to be made here.I am sure if the site members get all the bits and pieces for the conversion you could charge a fee to fit it i wouldnt mind paying for one of them sexy sat navs.Have a think about it what do you think forums members.P.S. Great site.

Hi adam7157
If you have read all the posts, you'll be aware that a sat nave conversion is only viable on cars already fitted with double-din Symphony radio units. I suspect very few members have this and even fewer would be interested in sat nav upgrade costing several hundred to fit.
Obviously only Skipton can decide but I suspect there would be limited interest in offering a fitting service similar to the one for his highly regarded cruise control conversion.

Cheers Spike

If there is the demand, then I will cater for it - that is to say, if an owner wishes to install RNS-E into either a single or a double-DIN dashboard, I will undertake the task.

However, the service will not be cheap, especially for a single-DIN dashboard. The parts alone will total over £1000 and when you've added on labour, you'll be looking at about £1400-1500 and possibly an overnight stay if you're not local.

Cheers,

Mike
