Road Wheel clicking when turning

Hi there,

My mothers a2 has the above problem, can hear clicking when outside the vehicle and the road wheel shakes/vibrates. steering wheel doesnt shake though it feels like something is grinding when turning.

can anyone shed any light on this? my guess is CV joint/s?

is it a big job to do yourself if it is that?

cheers

More likely is a wheel bearing to be honest and this is a specialist job, as the removal and press tools are somewhat expensive!

Raise the wheel off the ground and give it a wobble to see if there's any play at all.

Cheers,

Clicking when turning

My money would be on the outer cv joint if its clicking.I had both front wheel bearings go within 6 months of each other. The second one I had to leave for about 8 months before repairing :eek:and at no point did I hear it click, it rumbled and complained plenty but no clicking.

Also have a look at the front tyres for bulges on the inner sidewall. Another club member had something similar happen and although less likely to be the problem its easy to check. As you probably know its very unusual for an Audi CV joint to fail unless the boot has split allowing water/dirt ingress - something else thats simple to check.

I don't recall any club member changing CV joints so you may be the first to try. If that is the problem, one thing to be aware of is the splines on the outer CV joint are usually loctited in so a puller is needed to push the splined shaft through the hub.

Thanks for your input so far gents,

have had a quick look at it, and there is zero play in the wheel and no bulges on the tyres.

will jack it up properly if i get time tomorro and have a look to see if the boots have split. hope not!

Cheers
James
