SAFE mode - how do you enter code?

Hi there

We've had work done on our car recently which will have meant the battery is now disconnected and the radio says "SAFE" when turned on because I'm assuming the code needs to go in.

I think I have the code, its 4 digits long and has been written down on some paper work provided with the car.

However I'm not sure how to actually enter it ! I have every manual bar the audio one provided with the car. Its the Symphony CD+cassette unit if that helps?

Pressing any of the buttons on the front of the stereo including the numeric ones seem to do nothing !

thanks!

I'm not sure which model you have but these are the instructions for Symphony 1.
I'm not sure if this also applies to Symphony 2 (which has a built in single slot 6 CD changer)

Switch on - display shows SAFE as you indicate
Press and hold TP and RDS buttons at same time until 1000 appears
Release buttons (dont touch again or 1000 will be entered as the code)
Using station select buttons 1 to 4 enter code. Use button 1 to select first digit of security code, button 2 for second digit etc (buttons 5 and 6 cannot be used)
Once code is entered press TP and RDS buttons together and holde until SAFE appears
Release buttons and a radio frequency will appear in the display
Job done

If you accidently enter the wrong code the word SAFE will start flashing. You get ONE more chance to go through this procedure and enter the correct code.
There is a more complicated procedure to go through after this with one hour time delays between attempts

Cheers Spike

Just to clarify Spikes instructions, you enter the code via the station preset buttons 1-4.

So, say the code is 5238, you'd press '1' five times, '2' twice, '3' three times and button '4' eight times.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks chaps, I'll give this a try in the morning , much appriciated

I kind of hoped it would be a two button combo to get it working, I had tried every single button on its own so thought it must be something different !

thanks, much appriciated, Paul

This worked a treat, thanks very much guys

Wish I had asked a couple of days earlier before enduring 300 miles of driving on Monday with no radio !

thanks again !

Thanks for reply how do I go about codeing it.
Is it as simple as leaveing it for 24 hours and entering the radio code supplied

No, that will only make the unit come out of Safe mode.

To code the unit for a changer requires a full version of VAG com, which, as you know, I have.

Cheers,

Mike

If you can pop up on Wednesday, I'll do the necessary and give the car a full diagnostic scan to help with the sale.

Cheers,

Mike

I read in the manual that the car recognised the radio and this never needs to happen? I was about to rip mine out there and install some new cables for the amp, but got sick, so now Im wondering, I dont have the orginal code as the last owner nicked it!

If you don't have a code, then it'll enter safe mode after about an hour of no power. If you can prove ownership, Audi dealers may get the code for you FOC, but only 'may'.

It is worthwhile getting the code for future reference and for safety sake, should the battery go, or you need to disconnect it.

Cheers,

Mike
