Servicing costs

Hi all,

In advance of buying my first A2, I'm trying to get a rough feel for running costs...
1. What is the typical cost of getting a service done? Are there major and minor service intervals?
2. How long on average do tyres tend to last? My Smart Roadster gets through rears every 15k miles or so but the fronts last until they crack from old age, so I realise it can be quite variable!
3. What's the cost of replacing major components? Cambelt, turbo (75/90) etc.

Thanks in advance,
Tom

Speaking only for the TDI, I would say typically 300 quid or so, but it depends on several things (for example, Audi main dealers will charge ££££ for labour costs). The service intervals depend on whether you have longlife services or 10k annual services.

This depends on the tyre, some last a lot longer than others. I use Michelin Energy Saver Plus, and they last a long time. I usually find that the rears last longest.

3. What's the cost of replacing major components? Cambelt, turbo (75/90) etc.

Never had to replace a turbo (and I've run TDIs for many years). Cambelt ... again, it depends where you are doing it, but I think 350 is typical.

If you are in Oxfordshire, then that means that Stealth Racing in Southam, Warwickshire is within reasonable distance (I drive 2 hours each way to get my car serviced there. and even after taking a B&B room, it's cheaper than getting it done locally by Audi themselves). He specialises in TDIs (and A2s in particular).

Many thanks for the reply. Sorry, I should have specified that I'm looking at 1.4 TDi variants so servicing costs for that particular model are of interest.

The service intervals depend on whether you have longlife services or 10k annual services.

I've seen 'variable' and 'fixed' servicing mentioned. Is this what you're referring to? What are the specifics of each service interval type?

I'll be sure to check them out, thanks.

Fixed servicing = the shortest of either 1 year, or 10k miles

Longlife AKA variable servicing = it changes depending on how you drive & the type of journeys you do, but it can be up to 2 years and 30k miles. A special oil is used which does not degrade as quickly as the normal oil. If you do short journeys then the interval will be much shorter (i.e., the number of cold starts is the main factor).

I officially have longlife services, but in common with many on the forum I don't wait for the service warning to come up, I do it each year at MOT time (typically 15-20k miles), when I get it serviced the indicator is usually telling me that I can still do a further 10-12k miles.

If major item costs such as turbo are relevant, then I would recommend a remapped 75 instead of a 90. The 75 has a simpler turbo and a single mass flywheel instead of a dual mass flywheel.

Thanks for the very clear explanation.

Hi Tony,
Thanks, good to know there is an A2 specialist not far away.

Hi Tom

I am a recent tdi owner and had the same questions.
I had my cam belt and water pump changed by a local specialist using genuine parts for £320, before I heard about a2 cars.
I have now been to A2 cars in MK for cruise mod and the free check over. Everything you read on hear about tony is accurate, he is a lovely guy and an enthusiast and if you can get your car to him I would recommend you do so. As well as fixing your a2 he will make you feel welcome and answer any questions you may have while he works. I will definitely be going back and I'm in andover so it's a fair old drive but well worth the effort IMHO.

Just to add I've had my a2 since March and the longer I own it the more I like it. Super little car.

Many thanks for the info and another +1 for A2 Cars. I'm hoping to secure an A2 soon...
