Shield for ABS ring, Front Bearing

I'm hoping someone can clear this up quickly for me: In the attached photo, there are two shields(?).

The black one came with the new CV joint kit and clips onto a lip around the circumference of the main body of the joint, immediately before the root of the spline outer shaft.

The white one came with the FAG bearing kit. The instructions that came with the bearing say that the shield must be fitted, but don't show how or in what orientation (unless I've missed something in the blurb).

So: Are the two parts doing the same job or do they supplement each other? Also, which way should they face? Clipping the black one onto the CV joint the 'easy' way - i.e. the body of the CV joint pushes through the tangs and it just clips into place - leaves a big gap between the shield and the magnetic ring on the bearing.
