Shifty shifting

Life with my A2 so far is quite nice overall, save for the shifting. My gear selector doesn't spring back to centre on its own in neutral, which makes shifting between second and third difficult sometimes. The shifting is notchy, but not difficult.

I cleaned up the shifter box which was filled with bits of the rubber underboot and used some all-purpose grease on the lever ball, which after some reading here and watching videos elsewhere seems like the last thing to do. So yesterday I tried adjusting the cables, which has made the shifting nicer overall but has left the 1 to 2 transition a bit notchy and hasn't solved the problem of springing back to neutral.

My selector tower is a mess. Covered in oil and generally unhappy looking, and not as sprightly on the up-down movement as it appears it should be from the videos I've seen. I've read here that there's a bearing inside the tower that might need lubrication, but this video from Dieselgeek suggests the pivot mount for the side-to-side bracket could be corroded. I wouldn't be surprised at all given the general ugliness. Here's a short video of the action:

So, I humbly seek your advice on what to do next in order to cure my side-to-side return to centre and generally make my gearshifts as they should be. I will be servicing the gearbox oil as well. On top of the shifting the clutch engagement chatters near the top of the pedal in first gear, so that might need a look too. Thanks all.

I believe the side to side stiff feeling with the gear knob not 'springing' back to centre is not an uncommon occurance with the aging VAG gearboxes but unfortunately I'm no gearbox expert so not able to offer any advice but it would be a shame for this to go unanswered as I'm sure there is someone on here that has had and resolved the same issue and not only would it help you but probably many others in the future. ?

Anyone?

Had this work done at wom automotive in May 2017
Transmission tower bearing kit & gear box oil change
As been smooth gear change every since
Hope this helps

Thanks to all for the replies. I managed this past weekend to pull the selector pivot and remove a fair bit of corrosion on the pivot and the pivot mount, per the Dieselgeek link above. Prior owners must have exposed this car to the elements quite a bit, as there's aluminum corrosion everywhere under the bonnet. The shifting is much improved, but I've also ordered new pivot bushes to complete the job properly.

Highly recommend trying this first if you're having problems with springing back to centre in neutral.
