Shocks and abs wires damaged..

I recently posted a query about my ABS lights coming up on dash after a flat tyre. Was advised to check ABS sensors for dirt / damage. All OK except front O/S. Looking at earlier threads on this subject I came across details of the Sport models 17" tyres rubbing on the ABS sensor wire and causing damage. Seems like this is the case. See photos.

Is this something any garage can fix at a reasonable cost??

Also, whilst checking the sensors, I noticed that the rear shock absorbers rubbers had worn and decayed leaving the plastic tubular cover free to move up and down on the shaft. This has occurred on both sides. See photos.

Again, any ideas on cost to fix anyone??

Thirdly, the front shocks seem to have a expandable plastic cover, this again seems to have come loose and is not attached to anything at the bottom end?
See photo.

Are these problems a current safety hazard or is it OK to run the car with these issues. I understand that while the ABS light has activated, I no longer have ABS or traction control, but i can temporarily cope with that???

Any help will be greatly appreciated......

Hi

I had to replace the same cable on my front rige (not wheel rubbing though), and Mike (Skipton01) replaced the loom including the parts for £80, though I'm not sure of the price now. I'm sure the right garage will do this for you, but my local were not really interested in dealing with the electrics, and Audi will charge a fortune (I suspect).

As for the damper covers, its not a problem with safety, they are there to extend the service life of the shock by minimising dirt ingress. You should look at securing them into the correct position but it's certainly not something to worry about! This is all my non-professional opinion :)

Have a look at this post - I recently had the same issue with the wiring loom (it didn't wear but got damaged and shorted after heavy rain!) - can't remember off hand how much the new loom was but it wasn't more than £30 ish I think and I got it mail order from Dave @ Stoke Audi.

Easy to fit loom at the wheel end of things - just 2 connections however I bottled it when I traced it through the wheel arch and into the main wiring loom of the car so got my local specialist to do the work for me - if they know what they are doing it is not a massive job you just need a bit of electrical know how.

Ref the shocks - not sure but someone on here will be able to help I am sure.

Good luck!

Rear bumpstops is a common thing they do go after a while, when i fitted my FSD's last year mine where in a worse state than yours, at the front you will find when you lower it down it fit's better but not tight as it is only a dust cover. Your cable i think is something that has been posted a lot on here with this problem when fitting 17" wheels, when you get the loom replaced it should be tooked away so that it wont rub in the future

Cheers Phil

Thanks for advice Antony, will have a go at soldering and heat shrinking the ABS wire for now as i have seen in another thread that this was successful. Just been made redundant so dont fancy a trip to a dealer / garage..!

Will consider doing a shock replacement too if i can muster up the courage.. Never really done these type of things before, but needs must...
Thanks everyone for your help...
Andres

Hi Phil, any idea where best to buy replacement rear shocks? And do i need specialist tools to remove old ones and fit new ones. I have the usual tools in garage, trolley jack, axle stands, socket sets etc... Will that do??
Thanks,
Andres

Your shocks are ok aren't they its only the bumpstops you'll need to replace and dealer is your best bet. They are pretty easy to fit the nut is found behind the wheel arch and you get to it from the outside of the car not like most cars where you find them in the boot

Jack up rear of car allow shock to fall to max,
Two nuts at the top of the shock,
Bump stops afaik are about a £10 each?

or if your a rougher just glue the old bump stop to the protector.

the rear job is easily DIY:D

Found website that can supply bumpstops but they are showing 2 different sizes. I have an 2003 sport. Any idea what size is right..
Bumpstop 123mm (1GA,G07,G08) Febi 23410 £7.87 each
Bumpstop 140mm (G22) Febi 23526 £7.95 each

Thanks, Andres

Fixed it..

Just to let newcomers and novices know, that I, Mr Never-been-under-a-bonnet-or-fixed-a-car-in-my-life, has cut out the damaged section of the ABS loom where the wheel was rubbing against it, soldered the wires back together and wrapped up connection with heatshrink sleeve. And it bloody worked..!! Just goes to show that some jobs, even a dim wit can do...

Just need to decide if I will tackle the bumpstops on my tod now......
