Should I replace the head gasket or am I being paraniod?

My A2 has been of the road for a while now, I was thinking while its off the road that I might give it a bit of attention.

I have planned to service it - all new lubricants, coolants and fluids. Spark plugs and maybe even a new water-pump. But since the car has done over 100,000 miles it got me to thinking about the head-gasket.

As we all know if your head-gasket goes then its bad news.

Would it be worth replacing it for preventative maintenance?

If it's not giving cause for concern I wouldn't worry.
I once had a 1992 Passat that had done 160k+ and the head had never been off, it was just serviced well and cared for. Come to think of it I can't recall it having a clutch either...the joys of motorway mileage and considerate driving

I agree with nuttinnew. Headgasket failures on the A2 petrol engine are quite rare and generally only triggered by cooling system problem such as water loss due to damaged radiators or hoses etc.
If you plan to change the waterpump then do the cambelt at the same time

Cheers Spike
