Showroom uses

I've been think about why people only visit showrooms when they have to. Given the number forums and sites on the tinterweb and the number of magazines in WHSmiths on the subject we seem, as a nation, to have our fair share of people who seem interested in cars. Add to that the number of people who show a bit of brand loyalty isn't it a bit of a wasted opportunity to keep all that space empty around the new cars when it could be full of people?
If any one has been down to a motorbike show room at the weekend they'll know what I'm talking about. Theres usually a tv (with motorsport), coffee, vending machines etc loads of other enthusiasts talking to each other about bike stuff. The dealer sells tons of accessories and parts and even the odd new bike.
As punters convince themselves that they need the latest and greatest bits, they might even be able to get rid of a few salesmen.

Some of us might like to have spent last saturday night watching the Audis at Le Mans (Work kept me from the real thing) with a few other enthusiasts.
(I remember mentioning Le Mans in a stealers a couple of years back and they didn't know what I was talikng about!)

What do people think? Anyone from Audi listening?

Jonathan

The new Audi showroom in Norwich has to be a contender for the Eden Project:D So much glass facing the sun it's too uncomfortable to sit for longer than 5 mins on a sunny day.

Jonathan, there will be no one from Audi listening, they apparently face disciplinary action for accessing the A2 web site, this was reported on an ancient post, I would expect it still to be true.
I went to my local stealers parts dept, a separate site remote from the showroom, and there were 7 suits in there with one away on holiday. There were no mouth watering goodies on show, and every suit was playing, sorry, busy, on their computers. Could this be a clue to the extremely high servicing costs?

You are right regarding motorcycle showrooms where punters go for a chat with their money burning a hole in their pockets. I know, I have been there, done that,..... T shirt etc. My son does it now, usually returning with the latest goodie. There are few stealers where you would go for a chat, but 7 suits!

Well Dick, I'll be darkening the doors of my local dealers soon - I've just got £400 in Audi vouchers by way of compensation for my recent steering troubles and the length of time it's taken to sort them out!

And I've got my next service free!

Now then, what can I possibly spend £400 on in an Audi dealers? Hmmmmmm

Skipton, Mike, I just don't know what to spend £400 in vouchers at an Audi dealers. I really don't, I suppose you'll end up using them for some service work which you could probably do yourself. So have they really given you £400 worth of value?

Oh I can think of a few things - parts mainly. I need a couple of aerial amplifiers for my tv tuner amongst other things, then there's an auto-dipping rear-view mirror, PDC sensors, the list goes on.

You do realise that by the end of all this, I still won't have one thing that your A2 has - heated seats! I am trying to find an upholstery specialist in the area though who can un-pick the stitching to see whether the heater element is actually there with the cables cut (as per the factory fitting instructions). If so, I'll just run some new cable in, as I've just bought a new climate unit from Germany with the controls in.

Don't think I can bring myself to wear an Audi baseball cap though......

Mike, I must say the A2 heated seats are better than the Volvo. A2 does bum and back, Volvo does bum only. I wish you luck in your search, they are nice on a winters morning especially in the frozen north i.e.any north of Holborn Circus.

Just imagine what it's like in the Pennines then!

Hi Mike,
Which kind of TV amplifiers will you go for? Do you know of any digital amplifiers that would work? Two things I am thinking of 1. reception is often poor for sat nav TV+ and 2. the big switch from analogue to digital starts next year. I heard of a replacement antenna that also allows Freeview access etc. Not that I am a big fan of the telly, but it has its uses.

I'll be getting the Audi amps - don't confuse these with the reciever itself, they perform 2 completely separate roles.

I did look into getting a DVB (Freeview) receiver myself, but ruled it out for cost and performance reasons. Cost wise, they are still in excess of £400 and performance wise, well, they either work or they don't.

This might sound like a daft statement, but basically, you either get a great picture, or none at all, unlike the analogue system where you can get a shashy picture. Also, where I live, I wouldn't be able to pick up a freeview signal and where I work (Manchester centre) the signal is mostly blocked at street level by the tall buildings.

So, analogue for me for the time being.

The plus side is that the genuine Audi tv tuner has 2 auxillary inputs, so I can always add a Freeview tuner at a later date.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks, Mike.
In a couple of years there will be no choice anyway as all analogue broadcasts will be discontinued by the BBC and ITV.
We may face a great picture or nothing at all by then and be cosiderably poorer trying to find out. Great.
