Ski carrier

Hi,

Since the A2 is limited to carrying 30kg on it's roof. I was wondering whether it's possible to carry two sets of ski's on that roof. The ski's would weigh approximatly 6 kg per set, so two sets would already mean 12 kg. That leaves only 18 kg for roofrails and ski carriers.

Does anyone know what the weight of the roofrails is ?
And what would happen if the weight on the roof is more then 30 kg. I bet that it wouldn't suddely cave in.

Ok, no exact figures here, all from memory:

I think the figure of 30 is wrong. It's 40kg. I'm quite sure about that.
The roofrails weight I'm not so sure about. I recall something in the order of 5.5kg. Since they're part-aluminium too, I'm guessing that is for the two together (would be a bit heavy if just for one).

So that leaves you with nearly 25kg for the ski carriers + anything else you put on there. That should work.

And I have no idea what could happen when you overload the roof. There must be a margin before really bad things start to happen. And then perhaps you risk cracking the windshield or simply just deforming the locations where the rails grip the roof. Caving in seems a very hard thing to cause, IMHO.

BTW, I have the roofrails but they're stored in a really awkward place. Otherwise I'd look up their weight for you, of course.

Cheers,

Edo

I think it has more to do with taking your car's centre of gravity too high, than it has to do with damaging the roof. You can sit 150kg or whatever on there without anything breaking I'm sure. But the more weight you add there the easier the car will topple over in a fast bend. The ESP's parameter's thus only allows you 40Kg. That is my theory anyway.

I'm with Johann on this one. The stiffness of the roof will be very high for the crashworthiness of the vehicle (4* EuroNCAP). But if for example you had a 150kg mass on the roof and went over a bump in the road whilst going around a corner that mass could easily equate 4-5kN of load, which could well make the car unstable.

I think this needs to be considered, if you have the "open sky" which is 35kg at the highest point of the A2, you can't have a roof rack, althrough one can be fitted as proved by a member of the A2OC, however having the "open sky" roof in my opinion didn't help with Rod Earl's accident as this added weight with the added shunt from the Ford resulted in His A2 doing a dying fly impression, so it is my opinion that if you realy need to carry things on the roof then keep it a light as possibile.
