Speedo not working

This is my first ever post on a forum so be gentle..
I purchased an A2 TDi on a 54 plate a few weeks ago, but the speedo has packed in. I've had a route around on here but cannot find an answer hence my first post, i'd appreciate some help.
There are a number of warning light on on the dashboard, ABS, picture of an engine block, and one with a circular arrow (all yellow in colour). When i set off an alarm goes off and then I get a flashing ! which continues to flash.
The rev counter, clock and fuel guage work, the temperature guage works most of the time but sometimes doesn't.
I don't know if its related but the climate control seems to work intermitently, typically usually doing the opposite to what you want :) But is no biggy.

From what i've read on here, i understand the later cars might use an ABS sensor for the speed. How do i know if mine is one of those and which sensor is it?
I'm wary of just taking to a garage for them to to charge me a fortune to plug it into their computer and then tell me it could be a whole variety of things. Besides I was made redundant 3 weeks ago, i have a new job but won't get paid for a little while and funds are very tight. If anyone has had a similar problem and knows a solution that would be great. It'd be great to know what speed i'm doing through the average speed cameras on the way to work ;-)

Thanks in advance..

Hello,

Your car does speed off the abs sensors as you suggest. I suspect a sensor is faulty as thats what could trigger the warning lights you suggest. There is one on each wheel, initially check the cables are all connected as a "simple" step. Ideally a scan with a diagnostic tool can help as if its a sensor / wiring to sensor it will point in right direction.

Thanks Murdo, i had found that one (and thanks for the search tips - its taken me 2 weeks to work out how to post a thread so not great at these forums). My impression was they were older cars with a gearbox sender, also mine just does not work at all and the power steering is fine. I was thinking mine might not have a gearbox sender with it being newer as PaulA2 seems to think.
If mine is an ABS sensor then is it just one from one wheel or more than one, does anyone know which?
What does the ABS sensor look like so if i have a look for a loose connection to one I know what i'm looking for?

Thanks again

Hi Lakeland,

I'm based just south of you in Lancaster and know the A2's electronics inside-out. I'm currently away with work for a few weeks, but I've no doubt that I can diagnose and fix your A2's problem if you can hold on until I'm back.

Cheers,

Tom

Lakeland you are lucky lad to be near Tom / timmus as what he does not know is probably not worth knowing!

There is a single sensor on each wheel, the fronts are located on the top of hub assembly with a thickish black cable running up round back of shock absorber into the inner wing.

Hi Tom, yes you're not far away. Thank you for the offer i'd be really grateful if you could let me know when your back.

Regards

Chris
